Language Instruction for Newcomers (LINC) - Youth Video Project

This new FREE program is available to LINC eligible youth 18 to 25 years old.

The LINC Youth Video Project leads to the equivalent of Grade 12 English for post-secondary admission at Mohawk College.

The program will provide youth with the English and other essential skills to prepare them for post-secondary education and the workplace. Transportation assistance may be available to eligible students.

New students will be accepted every Monday.

You can watch some of the work of the LINC for Youth Video Project students here. Students in each session produce a documentary about an issue that affects their lives as young newcomers. These are the documentaries:

Culture Shock: Life as an Immigrant Youth was made by students in the first LINC for Youth Video Project, in September 2008. It explores the pain and loneliness of young immigrants who have to move away from their friends and schools start over in a new country, with a new language and culture.

Lost on a Dead-End Street: Newcomer Youth at Work (March 2009) is about the kinds of jobs that immigrant youth often get stuck in, and what can help them or stop them from moving on to a good education and career.

Under the Hijab: (September 2009) explores the meaning of hijab and the experiences of young Muslim women who wear hijab in Canada.

After the Storm: Newcomer Youth Surviving Trauma (March 2010) tells the stories of young refugees who escaped from situations of violent conflict in their home countries, how that trauma has affected them, and how they are moving on in their lives.
