New head coach Vinny Saporito was a happy man. His Mountaineers won their opening game of the OCAA men’s volleyball campaign, defeating the visiting
Sheridan Bruins 3-1 Saturday (Oct. 20).
Set scores were 25-20, 18-25, 25-19, 26-24.
Michael Kong led the attack for Mohawk, with 13 kills and six digs. Rafael Leite recorded 10 kills and Alex Tripp had 41 assists.
Andre Zopf paced Sheridan with 14 kills. Richard Davids had 10 kills, Po-an Chien notched 35 assists and Liam Butchereit contributed 16 digs.
Coach Saporito said it was a very close match. “We went point by point exactly as we planned for the first set and we started to pull away at the end, “ said the coach.
“We handled them a little bit more in the second set.
I then told the boys the third set is the hardest set to play. Everyone knows what you’re doing. They read you. It’s all about momentum, energy and confidence.” Saporito noted the team got down on itself, but then they started to show a little will and intensity.
As for the exciting fourth set , the coach said that’s the way volleyball should be played with a difference of only two points.
