Mohawk squandered a big lead, then recovered just in time to defeat the Sheridan Bruins in OCAA men's volleyball Thursday (Feb. 7) in Oakville.
The Mountaineers won a big road decision, 25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 22-25, 15-10 over the Bruins.
The Mountaineers had a match point in the third set and had they covered it they would have swept the game. But Sheridan pushed back and not only did they force a fourth set, they won that one also, to force the match to a fifth and deciding set, when anything can happen.
Fortunately, the Mountaineers kept their cool and won the decider in a fairly comfortable fashion.
Elijah Lopez had a huge match for Mohawk with 30 kills. Joel Van Dyk added 14 kills and Daniel Fontanna collected 59 assists.
Andrew Cianci had 18 kills for the Bruins.
It was an important win as Mohawk improved its record to 9-8 and tied for fifth place in the West Division with Conestoga. Sheridan, who had a chance to pull even with the Mountaineers, instead fell back to 7-10.
