The Mohawk women’s team won a bronze medal at the OCAA Indoor Soccer Championships at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan Friday (March 22).
Mohawk bounced back from an opening game loss in round robin play, to secure their spot in the final four.
St. Clair Saints beat the Mountaineers 3-2 in the opener, despite goals from Laura Stankovic and Daniela Cardillo.
In their second game Mohawk nipped Seneca Sting 1-0 as Stankovic struck again.
Then in the crucial final round robin game, a goal by Sarah Ongarato in the 10th minute held up as the Mountaineers nipped the Conestoga Condors 1-0.
That put them in the semi finals against the host Humber Hawks, but the Hawks won 3-1. Cardillo got the Mohawk goal.
So Mohawk had to shoot for a bronze medal and were successful. Alyssa O'Brien's goal, early in the second half, stood up as the winner as the Mountaineers won 1-0 over St. Clair.
Sabrina Mariani, who had an excellent championship in goal, recorded the shutout.
Humber moved to the final and defeated the Fanshawe Falcons 4-2 and captured the women's gold medal.
Meanwhile, the Mohawk men's team finished with a 1-1-1 record and did not advance to Friday's play.
The Mountaineers got two goals from Ian Kere to draw 2-2 with Sheridan in their first game.
They then beat Conestoga 2-1 with markers from Agi Oginri and Adam Villella.
However in their final round robin game,The UTM Eagles got a goal with less than 2:30 remaining for a 1-0 win over the Mountaineers.
George Brown Huskies won the gold medal, defeating Fanshawe 1-0.
The UTM Eagles took the men's bronze, 2-0 over the Sheridan Bruins.
