Understanding the LGBTQ2SQIA+ acronym

Pride flags at Pride parade

By: Donna Moreau (Programs & Services Coordinator, Student Life) & Sean Connors (Student Wellness Coordinator)

In celebration of Pride Month, we at Mohawk College believe it is important for everyone to understand what the LGBTQ2SQIA+ acronym represents. We invite you to act in allyship to queer and trans folks by first familiarizing yourself with the below terms. This small act can make a BIG difference in building a more positive, understanding, and inclusive campus community.

The following breaks down what each of the letters in LGBTQ2SQIA+ means:

a female-identified person who is attracted to other female-identified persons.

a male-identified person who is attracted to other male-identified persons.

a person who is attracted to their own gender as well as one or more other genders.

Trans, Transgender or Trans Identified:

a person whose gender identity differs from their assigned sex at birth.

an umbrella term that some use in place of other LGBTQ+ labels.

a person of Indigenous descent whose individual spirits are a blend of both male and female. This label provides an alternate to the Western labels.

a person who is in the process of exploring and discovering their own sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression.

a person whose sexual anatomy or chromosomes do not fit with the traditional markers of “female” or “male”.

a person who does not feel sexual desire or attraction to any group of people. This person may or may not experience romantic attraction.

Plus Sign:

represents the infinite variety of identities outside of or not represented by the LGBTQ2SQIA+ acronym.
