Perinatal Support Worker

Overview
The next intake for this program will be Fall 2021.
Build on your existing skills and knowledge as a Personal Support Worker in this new program! Open to Personal Support Worker graduates, the PNSW program covers the period from conception through the first year of a newborn's life. The program encompasses support for low and high risk women (social as well as medical) and includes working with the disability community. No other support program offers such a comprehensive curriculum.
Upon completion of the program, the PNSW will function much like a Personal Support Worker does, acting both independently and under supervision of a health care professional such as a nurse or midwife depending upon the circumstance of their employment.
As an independent, ancillary member of the health care team the PNSW will be able to act as an advocate for the women and families they support. Working in collaboration with other members of a woman's health care team the PNSW can create the most appropriate and personalized emotional, educational and physical support for mother, baby and family. The PNSW will also be able to deliver perinatal education to new and expecting parents.
The PNSW program offers a new and innovative career option for those whose passion is working with new and expecting families.
- Train to provide evidence based educational, emotional and physical support appropriate to the individual needs of the client/s
- Learn to provide supportive care for newborns and infants up to the age of 1 year
- Courses are completed online and in the evenings, allowing students to work while in the program
