Canada Summer Jobs Program
The Canada Summer Jobs Program will provide funding for employers to hire more students for both full-time and part-time positions beginning on May 11 and extending through to February 28, 2021. You'll be able to search for positions on the Government of Canada Job Bank website.
Suspension of Student Loan Repayments
Both the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario have announced that student loan repayments have been suspended from March 30–September 30, 2020, and that interest will not be charged on student loans during this time.
The Government of Ontario has announced temporary changes to rental processes that could be relevant to your circumstance as a tenant.
Canada Child Benefit & Special Goods and Services Tax credit
Families that are eligible for the Canada Child Benefit and the Special Goods and Services Tax credit payment will automatically receive an additional benefit. Details can be found on the Government of Canada COVID-19 Economic Response Plan page, under "Support for Individuals."

You can apply for support for families funding if you have children who are not in school or daycare as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID Emergency Bursary Application
The COVID-19 Emergency Bursary aims to assist full-time post-secondary students who were registered during the pandemic and are experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The fund is intended to help provide immediate short-term relief and is not intended as a source of long-term funding. The fund is expected to help students who are in urgent need of basic necessities.
It is expected that before applying for support from this fund, students will have explored all other sources of emergency funding such as support programs offered by the Federal or Provincial governments, study period income, OSAP or daycare subsidies.
- Full-time post-secondary domestic and international students who remain enrolled in their program and who have emergency financial needs because of the COVID-19 pandemic are eligible to apply to this fund.
- Students registered in apprenticeship programs, Second Career, City School and STEAM and who are studying through CE/part-time are ineligible for funding.
- Funds received through this bursary are taxable.
- Students in joint programs would apply to their home institutions.
- Students will be eligible to receive up to $500 for immediate unexpected costs.
- The application is planned to be open from April 22 to May 15, any changes to these dates will be communicated.
- Due to the volume of anticipated applications, students should anticipate up to a 3 business day response time. Please monitor your MyMohawk e-mail account for updates.
Acceptable Categories for Assistance:
- Unexpected or additional expenses based on individual needs or circumstances, all as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic; including food, medical, utilities and other essential living costs (resulting from COVID-19).
- Financial support for the purchase of required technology due to mandated online delivery (where financial need is demonstrated) including increased Internet charges.
- We recognize that some students may have incurred costs linked to self-quarantine/ hospitalization, funding may be considered in exceptional situations and on a case by case basis where financial need is demonstrated.
- The Government’s rent forgiveness/eviction freeze should cover most rent-related concerns, however, if a housing situation changed and a student incurred documented additional costs due to COVID-19 these may be eligible for review.
- Students must have a demonstrated financial need directly resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Expenses must be reasonable and supported with acceptable documentation.
Students will be required to submit supporting documentation that validates their situation and outlines the expenses incurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This documentation must be provided before the funds are disbursed. Examples may include but are not limited to:
- Pay stubs and/or letter from employer
- Receipts for purchase of equipment (hardware or software) related to their program or course moving to an online delivery model.
- General proof or evidence of incurred expenses or quotes (if applicable)
Student Checklist for Submitting an Application
- Read the eligibility, timelines, and considerations.
- Complete the online application form.
- Agree to the terms and conditions of the application.
- Submit your application.
- The central email address to be used for inquiries and follow up is relieffund [at] mohawkcollege.ca.
- A confirmation email will be sent to the student’s Mohawk College email indicating that their application form has been submitted successfully and is being reviewed.
- Applications will be assessed by Mohawk College and processed in the order that applications are received.
All student submissions will receive an e-mail from relieffund [at] mohawkcollege.ca advising on the results of their application.
- Applicants must complete all sections of the form. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
- Include a personal statement in the application that outlines your financial need resulting from COVID-19.
- Attach all relevant supporting documentation such as receipts with your application.
Processing Times and Receipt of Funds
Please allow three (3) business days for your bursary application to be assessed by Mohawk College, and an additional four to six (4 to 6) business days for your funds to be deposited to your bank account through EFT (electronic funds transfer) or 7-10 business days to receive a cheque. Within the application, you will be asked for your preference.
