2014 Winners

Professional Photographer's Choice - Judged by Jeff Tessier, Photographer

1st Place - Paris, France by Kendra Spurgeon

This photo makes me curious about the place where it was taken. Between the scooters and the café sign there is a good suggestion of life and activity but no activity shown, creating a sense of anticipation, suggesting there is more to see.

1st Place - Paris, France by Kendra Spurgeon

2nd Place - Santorini, Greece by Judy Portz

I like the play between movement and rest in this photo. The major line of movement between upper an lower levels - connects places of rest (homes). Also the stability and "anchored" quality of the village contracts nicely with the constant movement of the sea and the evidence of its effect on the rock face.

2nd Place - Santorini, Greece by Judy Portz

3rd Place - Doha, Qatar by Mohamad Darwiche

The simplicity of the subject matter and the stark mood shows a complexity in the scene - why is there a boat there? What is the purpose of this building? There's more going on than can be seen which is interesting.

3rd Place - Doha, Qatar by Mohamad Darwiche

Student Choice Award - Judged by Max Brown, MSA President

1st Place - Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates by Gabriela Vandyken

I love the use of the sand dunes to create a mesmerizing type "backdrop" with the camel in the photo. I think it captures the essence of the geographical location of the country. Great use of angles, light and contrast to create a wonderful photo.

1st Place - Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates by Gabriela Vandyken

2nd Place - Niagara Falls, Canada by Mohamad Darwiche

The photographer captured one of Canada's iconic landmarks and one of the wonders of the world, Niagara Falls. There is a lot of Canadian culture that surrounds that picture, and with the addition of the rainbow made for a beautiful photo.

2nd Place - Niagara Falls, Canada by Mohamad Darwiche

3rd Place - Morogoro, Tanzania by Brian Kisamo

What drew me to this photo was the colour and how dynamic it was. The content from the photo seemed to pop out of the frame. It almost looked like it wasn't real with how intense the colours were.

3rd Place - Morogoro, Tanzania by Brian Kisamo

Vice President Student Services Choice - Judged by Keith Monrose, Dean International & Partnerships

1st Place - Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Mexico by Karle Renaud

This photo had a quality of warm conviviality that really drew you in and made you feel a part of the scenery. The lighting at sunset also made it particularly beautiful to look at - this is why it was chosen for first place!

1st Place - Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Mexico by Karle Renaud

2nd Place - Dubai, United Arab Emirates by Ghalib Ahmad Qasim

This photo instilled a feeling of weightlessness, an amazing view of the clouds which make up the floor of the scene, while also depicting the tops of some of the highest reaching buildings in the world.

2nd Place - Dubai, United Arab Emirates by Ghalib Ahmad Qasim

3rd Place - Doha, Qatar by Mohamad Darwiche

This photo was chosen because of the contrast between the beautiful shoreline and the mysterious construct on the beach. It really stood out with its eerie and beautiful qualities.

3rd Place - Doha, Qatar by Mohamad Darwiche

2013 Winners

Student Choice Award - Judged by Ryan Chow

First Place Winner - Canada by Robert J. Gerritsen

Rocks - Our initial foundational steps we take growing - though we grow up differently we all come to a point where we must learn to swim.

Water - Our path into our future, there are no boundaries or wrong pathways when moving forward.

Distance and Sky - Our unlimited potential.

First Place Winner - Canada by Robert J. Gerritsen

Second Place Winner - Iran by Kamran Bakhtiari

Even in the world's roughest conditions life can be found, and no matter who we are or what kind of life we have lived we are able to recognize and protect that same innocence we have inside.

Second Place Winner - Iran by Kamran Bakhtiari

Third Place Winner - Italy by John Guilfoyle

A day in the life, everyone is happy, times are peaceful, and both human life and life in nature are co-existing happily.

Third Place Winner - Italy by John Guilfoyle

Professional Choice Award - Judged by Jeff Tessier, Photographer

First Place Winner - Brazil by Daniel Muller

Bridge and Fisherman - I love the juxtaposition of new technology with old technology. As well as the depiction of two different "daily life" components, one very solitary and stationary, the other busy and full of movement and great ambiance in the low light.

First Place Winner - Brazil by Daniel Muller

Second Place Winner - Indonesia by Nico Rahman

Sunset and Mountains - The colours in this photo are gorgeous and very moody. I like the way the photo plays between what is revealed and what is hidden, thereby creating a sense of mystery. Nice framing device with the outcropping on the right side.

Second Place Winner - Indonesia by Nico Rahman

Third Place Winner - France by Megan Gray

Park Scene - Great framing between the tree and the person and the statue in the background creates a further point of interest. The photo effectively conveys the mood of a city park, both a location and space but also a place for activity, in this case just relaxing.

Third Place Winner - France by Megan Gray

2012 Winners

Student Choice Award - Judged by Andrew Hall, MSA President

First Place Winner - Scotland photo taken by Fiona Winterton

My first choice came across as soon as I saw it. As a child my gramps would frequently talk about how beautiful the castles of Scotland are. When I saw the picture it brought back those stories. Very well taken picture, captures not only the beauty of Scotland, but the beauty of the castles too.

First Place Winner - Scotland photo taken by Fiona Winterton

Second Place Winner - Bahamas photo taken by Valerie Washburn

The Bahamas' houses are just a great picture. I love the balance of the sky, the water and the various colours of the houses. It is a really neat picture! I've always wanted to visit the Bahamas, and although it doesn't show the usual beaches and sunshine we are used to, it shows a different side of the island.

Second Place Winner - Bahamas photo taken by Valerie Washburn

Third Place Winner - Peru photo taken by Bernadette Ryan

The third picture was a tough choice to make between the houses and the mountains of Peru. This picture really brings out your inner child and makes you want to go on an adventure! Just the way the picture was captured, and how it shows the landscape moving away from you. Very well taken, and also a really neat picture.

Third Place Winner - Peru photo taken by Bernadette Ryan

Professional Choice Award - Judged by Jeff Tessier, Photographer

First Place Winner - Peru photo taken by Bernadette Ryan

I love the composition and the way in which the framing creates a layered arrangement of natural and architectural features. The contrast and complimentary of that it is very interesting. The sense of invitation is quite strong. The photo expresses both stark solitude and comfort at the same time.

First Place Winner - Peru photo taken by Bernadette Ryan

Second Place Winner - Canada photo taken by Laura Herbert

The sense of drama in this photo is amazing. I love that the photo captures a fleeting moment when all the elements of the sky and city are just so. Also, the use of negative space is very well done. ie. The inclusion of space without significant detail and the crowding of all the detail area to the bottom. This creates a nice sense of tension.

Second Place Winner - Canada photo taken by Laura HerbertSecond Place Winner - Canada photo taken by Laura Herbert

Third Place Winner - Austria photo taken by Li Na (Angela)

The photo effectively conveys a sense of the awesome scale of the mountain range, and expresses the power of that landscape. The composition, with its use of linear visuals, is strong. Also, the colour palette is gorgeous.

Third Place Winner - Austria photo taken by Li Na (Angela)
