Everyday Hero Lisa Pegg

Lisa Pegg
For going above and beyond in transforming students into job-ready graduates, Lisa Pegg is a Mohawk College Everyday Hero. In her 14 years at Mohawk, Lisa has served as a Learning Strategist / Adaptive Technologist with Accessible Learning Services, Curriculum Design Specialist with the Centre for Teaching and Learning and a Professor and Program Coordinator with the McKeil School of Business. Lisa is currently the Coordinator for Mohawk’s Business Analysis Post-Graduate Certificate Program and teaches in five programs. Lisa was nominated by a recent graduate who wrote “as a past student in the Business Analysis program, my peers and I can't praise Lisa enough for her efforts. She pours her heart and soul into the success of the program and gets to know her students on a personal level. My experience in the program was wonderful. Lisa empowered and accompanied us in finding internships that would launch us in our careers as business analysts.” Lisa is also Past-Chair of the provincial Curriculum Developers Affinity Group and is coordinating the group’s 2018 annual conference. Everyday Hero Tracey Richardson

Leo Barsony
For welcoming international students and making them feel at home at Mohawk College, recruiter Leo Barsony is an Everyday Hero. Leo retired at the end of March after 36 years of distinguished service to Mohawk. Leo was a tireless advocate and champion for international students. With common sense, humility and humour, Leo had an uncanny ability to resolve issues in ways that always put the students’ best interests at heart. Leo would have international students join his family for holiday meals and, in turn, visit with students’ families while overseas on recruitment trips. Leo demonstrated the same commitment and loyalty to his colleagues by always making time to mentor, listen and share his wealth of experience. Everyday Hero Donna Moreau

Donna Moreau
For helping students develop their leadership potential, Donna Moreau is a Mohawk College Everyday Hero. Donna joined the Mohawk Experience Team four years ago and is dedicated to giving students unique opportunities to develop their leadership skills. Donna played a key role this past fall in revamping Day One leader training and is helping to further strengthen the college’s MoCrew program, where student leaders volunteer at on-campus and community events, serve as college ambassadors and welcome new students to Mohawk. Along with Day One training and MoCrew, Donna is helping to further enhance Mohawk’s annual Celebration of Learning event which recognizes students' academic and extra-curricular achievements. Colleagues say Donna is the consummate team player who is always willing to step outside her comfort zone to give students a great college experience. Everyday Hero Tracey Richardson

Tracey Richardson
For helping students graduate to success, Tracey Richardson is a Mohawk Everyday Hero. Tracey has served as a Student Success Advisor since the role was introduced at the college in 2006. As a Student Success Advisor for the School of Community, Justice and Liberal Studies, Tracey supports and advocates on behalf of more than 1,700 students. By providing information and options, Tracey helps students navigate around any unexpected detours while on their educational journey at Mohawk. With respect and a sense of humour, Tracey connects students with college services and resources and also works closely with faculty and staff. Tracey also serves as a representative of support staff on Mohawk’s Board of Governors. Everyday Hero Kathy Hicks

Kathy Hicks
It’s all about the students for Mohawk College Everyday Hero recipient Kathy Hicks. Kathy serves as one of the Collaboratory and Tech Bar Team Leads at Mohawk's Fennell campus. Kathy, who joined Mohawk 13 years ago from Gennum Corp. in Burlington, goes above and beyond in assisting students with her vast knowledge of software solutions and research tools. She spends her days helping students one-on-one, in workshops and during class visits. Along with serving the thousands of students who fill the Collaboratory daily to study and complete group projects, Kathy works closely with faculty and staff on a host of initiatives, including Mohawk City School. Everyday Hero Hetal Patel

Hetal Patel
For helping students have a strong start at college, Hetal Patel is a Mohawk Everyday Hero. Hetal, a Student Success Information Management Specialist, has been an invaluable member of Mohawk’s Testing Centre for more than 10 years. Hetal supports both day-to-day operations and the design and delivery of assessments for success, pre-admission testing and accommodated testing for students with disabilities. Hetal is often the first person to meet with thousands of new students on campus. She goes above and beyond in making a great first impression and creates a welcoming and supportive environment at the Testing Centre. Hetal also works closely with faculty from across the college and with colleagues at Accessible Learning Services. Melissa Gallo, Director of Student Success Initiatives and Wayne Poirier, Vice President Student and Alumni Services, presented the award to Hetal. For helping to set and balance multi-million dollar budgets, Financial Planning Analyst Zoe Johnson (right) is a Mohawk College Everyday Hero. Zoe provides budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis to colleagues working in six departments while also managing the budget and forecast for college-wide full-time and corporate HR-related costs. A consummate professional, Zoe can always be counted on in meetings to know the numbers and bring a welcome sense of humour. Zoe was presented with her Everyday Hero Award during the farewell party for outgoing Corporate Services VP Deborah Brown. Everyday Hero Bob Mahood

Bob Mahood
For keeping the college wired to the Internet during a time of record-setting construction and renovation projects, Bob Mahood is a Mohawk Everyday Hero. A technician with Bell Technical Solutions, Bob installs fibre optic cables, network connections and Wi-Fi in computer labs, classrooms, common areas and offices across all three of Mohawk's campuses. Bob, who's at work early mornings, late evenings, weekends and holidays, can be counted on to stop what he's doing to help wayward students find their way to class. Bob received his award during the farewell party for Mohawk's outgoing Corporate Services VP Deborah Brown. For always staying cool under pressure and providing outstanding around-the-clock IT and audiovisual support for events, announcements and meetings both on and off campus, Audiovisual Technologist Carmine De Luca is a Mohawk College Everyday Hero. Carm also installs and supports technology in classrooms at all three Mohawk campuses. Outgoing VP Corporate Services Deborah Brown presented Carm with his award during her farewell party. For her superlative work in researching, developing and reviewing policies and procedures for colleagues from across the college, Jessica Japcevich (right) is a Mohawk College Everyday Hero. Along with her policy work, Jessica helps with insurance needs and legal issues, risk management and business continuity and serves on 11 committees as Mohawk's Corporate Policy and Risk Management Analyst. A lifelong learner, Jessica has earned a degree in communications from Brock and a certificate in human resources management from Mohawk, achieved her Canadian Risk Management designation and is currently working on a certificate in privacy law from Ryerson. Katie George
Professor Katie George is a Mohawk College Everyday Hero for consistently earning high marks from students and praise from colleagues for her poise and professionalism. A valued faculty member in Liberal Studies for the past decade, Katie shares her wealth of knowledge and clinical experience in the field of brain injury with students in her psychology courses and with other faculty. In addition to teaching at Mohawk, Katie works part-time as an advanced rehabilitation therapist in the Acquired Brain Injury Community Service Program at the Hamilton General Hospital while also raising a young family.

Everyday Hero Brian Willrich with Mohawk College president

Troy Heath
For enhancing the college experience for students in Mohawk’s Aviation Technician programs, Troy Heath is an Everyday Hero. In response to student and staff requests, Troy arranged to open a coffee and sandwich bar in the hanger where students train at the Hamilton International Airport. Troy, who serves as Mohawk’s Chief Business Development and Ancillary Services Officer also set up a system where student attendance will be tracked electronically for government reporting. And Troy arranged extended accommodation for Aviation students who stay in residence at the Fennell campus from mid-August to mid-May.

Brian Willrich
Professor Brian Willrich is a Mohawk College Everyday Hero for creating invaluable real world experiential learning opportunities for students while also strengthening ties with college partners. With Brian's expert guidance, students in Mohawk's Broadcasting - Television and Communications Media program have produced videos and promotional material for organizations including Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS), the Anglican Diocese of Niagara, Ronald McDonald House, Neighbour to Neighbour, SACHA Sexual Assault Centre and Wellwood Hamilton. Brian’s students also shoot behind-the-scenes video for the President’s Christmas Card recorded each year at Grant Avenue Studios. Brian recently oversaw a student documentary for HHS on a new collaborative nursing program delivered by HHS and Mohawk College. Brian spent his free time in the early mornings and late at night helping students on this project. Brian’s professionalism led to a superb learning experience for students and further enhanced Mohawk's partnership with HHS.

Ingie Metwally is a Mohawk Everyday Hero for making the college experience even greater for students at the Institute for Applied Health Sciences. Ingie goes above and beyond in her role as Student Life Program and Services Officer at IAHS. She’s introduced a series of new initiatives, including Treat Yourself Tuesdays, Wellness Wednesdays and Free Fruit Fridays. Ingie has also developed a peer mentor pilot program in Student Life across all campuses. For going above and beyond in providing exceptional service to students and support to co-workers, Ingie is a Mohawk Everyday Hero.

For providing outstanding compassion and support to staff at the Fennell campus, Mackenzie Redford is a Mohawk Everyday Hero. Mackenzie, who is one of the newest members of Mohawk’s Security Services team, is helping to keep the college a safe place to learn and work for students, faculty and staff.


Everyday Hero Maria Bracalenti with Mohawk College president

Maria Bracalenti
International students at Mohawk College have a champion in Maria Bracalenti. Maria, a coordinator with Mohawk’s International Student Services team, hosts Coffee Clubs every other week to bring together international and domestic students for informal conversations. Maria launched Coffee Clubs while working part-time at our college. Maria also helps organize and run workshops and information sessions for international students throughout the year. For making international students feel welcome at Mohawk, Maria is an Everyday Hero.
