Optional Ancillary Fees FAQs

Mohawk College and the Mohawk Students’ Association (MSA) offer many services, events and activities to enhance student experience that are funded through optional ancillary fees. Read more about optional ancillary fees, including costs and when they are charged.

Q. Why has the College introduced this fee change?

A. In January, the Province of Ontario announced that beginning September 2019, colleges and universities must give students the option to choose which non-essential fees they want to pay for. This change is in response to that directive.

Q. When do optional fees take effect?

A. The change in approach to ancillary fees takes effect for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Q. What is the difference between optional and mandatory ancillary fees?

A. Mandatory fees are used to fund major, campus-wide services and facilities or fees which contribute to the health and safety of students. Essential campus initiatives include: walk safe programs, health and counselling, athletics and recreation, academic support, career services, transit passes and health and dental plans.

All other fees are optional and students may choose to opt out of paying these fees.

Q. Are students charged for optional ancillary fees each semester?

A. There are 15 optional ancillary fees charged each semester. In addition, there are two optional one-time Alumni fees that are charged in the first semester only. Read more about optional ancillary fees.

Q. What are one-time optional fees?

A. One-time optional fees are charged only during a student’s first semester. One-time optional fees include the Alumni Lifetime Membership and the Alumni Souvenir. Read more about one-time optional fees.

Q. Are optional ancillary fees charged during co-op terms?

A. No, unless students are also taking courses in the same term.

Q. When can students opt out of optional fees?

A. Students may choose to opt out of optional ancillary fees when they select their timetable to register, or up to the 10th day of class. Should they wish to opt back in, they may do so at any time by visiting The Square at any campus.

Q. How do students opt out of optional fees?

A. Students opt out of optional fees online during the registration process. After a student selects their timetable, a table of optional fees and their values will be presented. To opt out of a fee, the student will uncheck the box next to the fee. Students will also need to confirm their opt out choice in a pop up each time they deselect an optional fee.

Q. Can a student change their choice after the 10th day of class?

A. Students can visit The Square at any campus to opt in after the 10th day of class. If a student opts in during the semester the optional ancillary fee is not prorated. Payment is due at the time of opt-in.

Students cannot opt out after the 10th day of class.

Q. If a student opts out of a fee does that mean they cannot participate in the event, activity or service the fee covers?

A. Students who choose to opt out of the following optional ancillary fees that are charged each semester may still participate in the program, activity or event associated with that fee.

  • Black History Month
  • Campus Sustainability Improvements
  • Community Garden
  • Day of Pink
  • Farm Stand
  • Greening Orientation
  • International Education Week
  • International Day of Persons with Disabilities
  • International Women's History Month
  • Mohawk Students’ Association (MSA)
  • Orange Shirt Day
  • Pride at Mohawk
  • Student Clubs (MSA)

However, if many students choose to opt out of a fee, the programs, events and activities that are associated with that fee may not be as robust.

Students who choose to opt out of the Alumni Lifetime Membership will not automatically receive their Alumni card upon graduation. The Alumni Lifetime Membership provides access to special Alumni offers and discounts, the In Touch publication and e-newsletter, access to Alumni events, programs and more. Students may choose to opt in at any time by visiting The Square at any campus.
