Learning Support Centre Policies

Using Peer Tutoring services or creating a WC Online account indicates that a student agrees to abide by Learning Support Centre policies.   

Our policies cover behaviour expectations, appointment scheduling, tutoring policies and our tutoring platform as well as how to access support for any issues you may encounter.  Read more below!

Behaviour Expectations

All tutoring appointments, workshops and activities sponsored by the LSC are safe and inclusive spaces.  The following guidelines help to foster this. 

Only say or do online what you would say or do offline.

  1. Keep a respectful tone and be polite 
  2. Refrain from making inappropriate comments (e.g. commenting on appearance; bringing up sensitive topics).
  3. Resolving Conflict: If a conflict arises during a tutoring appointment, please email LSC [at] mohawkcollege.ca or call 905-575-1212 ext. 3279. 

 

Appointment and Scheduling Policies

Students are expected to use WC Online to make their appointments  
  1. Students that require assistance scheduling their appointments can connect with our staff for support. We are available by email, phone and in-person in Room C122. 

  2. Students are expected to attend all their scheduled appointments. 

  3. Students are expected to cancel an appointment if they cannot attend. 

  4. Cancellation Policy: Students may cancel Course Peer Tutoring and Study Skills appointments up to 3 hours before the start of the appointment.  Math On-Demand and Writing & Communication appointments can be cancelled up to 30 minutes before the start of the appointment. 

  5. No-Show policy:  Students that do not attend an appointment and do not email, call, or cancel before the appointment starts, are considered a “no show” for their appointment.  After two “no show” appointments in a semester, your tutoring account might be suspended. 

  6. Arrive on time!  If the student/tutee is more than 15 minutes late to an appointment, the appointment is considered a “no show”. 

  7. Students need to check that they have booked their appointments correctly.  Appointments booked with the incorrect tutor or subject will be considered a “no-show”. Students are encouraged to connect with our staff if they are unsure or can’t find their subject.  

Tutoring Expectations

  1. All tutoring activities must take place within the scheduled tutoring appointment time.   

  2. Aside from online appointments, tutoring appointments are not to be conducted off-campus. 

  3. Tutors are not permitted to review work or assignments before the appointment. 

  4. Tutors cannot complete quizzes or do homework or assignments for students. 

  5. Tutors are not able to prepare lesson plans. 

  6. Students need to bring all materials they need to have a productive session. 

  7. Writing tutors provide interactive writing consultations.  They cannot compose, edit or re-write assignments. 

  8. All tutoring programs are for Mohawk College academic-related activities only. Students are expected to participate in the tutoring process. 

  9. Tutors are students too. They may not have all of the answers to your questions, so some questions will need to be directed to your teacher. 

  10. Appointments are based on tutor availability and are not guaranteed. 

Account Policies

  1. Students will need to create a WC Online account to access peer tutoring. 

  2. Students are not allowed to share their WC Online account with other students and are expected to keep login details private. 

  3. Your account is for your use only, Only make appointments for yourself.

  4. Students are allowed only one online tutoring account at a time. 

  5. WC online tutoring account should include a Mohawk Student ID and Mohawk email address.

Students registered with Accessible Learning Services are entitled to additional support with booking their tutoring appointments.  Students registered with Accessible Learning Services should email als [at] mohawkcollege.ca to find out more about scheduling assistance. 

Technical Issues

When technical issues occur, please reach out to LSC [at] mohawkcollege.ca or 905-575-1212 ext. 3279. We will work with you to resolve these issues promptly or reschedule your appointment if needed/possible. 

Personal Information and Personal Email

  1. All communication with tutors will take place during the scheduled appointment via WC Online, Zoom, 8x8, or a platform approved by the LSC. 

  2. Tutors are not permitted to provide their personal/Mohawk email addresses or phone numbers. 

  3. For any inquiries relating to tutoring outside of a tutoring appointment, please email LSC [at] mohawkcollege.ca or call 905-575-1212 ext. 3279.

User Agreement

  1. Students using WC Online or accessing LSC services have agreed to abide by these policies.  If a student experiences difficulty abiding by these expectations, then the Learning Support Centre will work with the student to be able to identify the concerning behaviours and plan for successful usage of services.   

  2. Students will initially receive a written or verbal warning if they have not followed any of the policies or expectations outlined in our Learning Support Centre Policies 

  3. If the behaviour continues or if the student is unable to follow other LSC policies, then the student’s account will be put on hold. The student will be expected to connect with the Learning Support Centre manager or staff to discuss the behaviour and plan for successful usage of services.  Once there is a plan in place the account will be reactivated. 

  4. If the behaviour continues or if additional LSC policies are not followed, the tutoring account will be suspended for 1-4 months. Students will be informed of the duration of the account suspension and the reason for the account suspension by either the LSC manager or staff. 

  5. Students with suspended accounts will need to speak with the LSC Manager or a member of the LSC staff after the suspension to reactivate the account. Students will be asked to identify how they can successfully use the services for the account to be reactivated.
