Learning Support Centre Policies

As a student using the Mohawk College Learning Support Centre, I understand that the following behaviour expectations and policies apply:

  • Appointment Scheduling: Schedule your appointments through WC Online or by emailing LSC [at] mohawkcollege.ca.
    • You may cancel Course Peer Tutoring and Student Success Mentor appointments up to 3 hours before the start of your appointment.
    • You may cancel Math On-Demand and Writing & Communication appointments up to 30 minutes before the start of your appointment.
    • After four cancelled appointments, your online tutoring account may be suspended.
  • Attendance Policy: Be present! Show up to scheduled appointments.
    • We know life happens, but if you know ahead of time that you will not be able to attend an appointment please email LSC [at] mohawkcollege.ca, call 905-575-1212 ext. 3279, or cancel on WC Online before the appointment starts.
    • If you do not attend an appointment and do not email, call, or cancel before the appointment starts, the appointment is considered a “no show”.
    • After two “no show” appointments in a semester, your tutoring account might be suspended.
  • Late Policy: Arrive on time!
    • If a tutor is more than 15 minutes late to an appointment, the appointment is considered “cancelled” at no fault of the student/tutee.
    • If the student/tutee is more than 15 minutes late to an appointment, the appointment is considered a “no show”.
  • Respect & Boundaries: Only say or do online what you would say or do offline.
    • This includes keeping a respectful tone (e.g. no shouting or raising your voice), using polite words (e.g. no swearing), and refraining from making inappropriate comments (e.g. commenting on appearance; bringing up sensitive topics).
  • Tutoring Appointment: All tutoring activities must take place within the scheduled tutoring appointment time.
    • Tutors are not permitted to review your work or assignment prior to the appointment.
    • Tutors are not able to prepare lesson plans.
  • Materials: Ensure that you bring all materials you need to have a productive session.
  • Personal Information & Email: All communication with tutors will take place during the scheduled appointment via WC Online, Zoom, 8x8, or a platform approved by the LSC.
    • Tutors are not permitted to provide their personal/Mohawk email addresses or phone numbers.
    • For any inquiries relating to tutoring outside of a tutoring appointment, please email LSC [at] mohawkcollege.ca or call 905-575-1212 ext. 3279.
  • Account Access: Only you should be logging into your account.
    • Keep your login details private.
    • You are not permitted to book an appointment for someone else through your account.
  • Account Information: You are allowed only one online tutoring account.
    • Your online tutoring account should include your Mohawk Student ID and Mohawk email address.
  • Appointment Booking: Please ensure you are selecting the right schedule and the appropriate course.
    • Booking an appointment for the wrong course will be considered a “no show” appointment and the appointment will be cancelled.
  • Block Booking: Block Bookings must be arranged through your Accessible Learning Services Accessibility Counsellor.
  • Tutoring Activities: All tutoring programs are for Mohawk College academic related activities only. Students are expected to participate in the tutoring process.
    • Tutors cannot complete quizzes with you, have lesson plans prepared for you, or do your homework or assignments for you.
    • Tutors are students too. They may not have all of the answers to your questions, so some questions will need to be directed to your teacher.
  • Availability: Appointments are based on tutor availability and are not guaranteed.
  • Technical Issues: When technical issues occur, please reach out to LSC [at] mohawkcollege.ca or 905-575-1212 ext. 3279. Please have patience, as many of these technical issues are out of our control. We will work with you to resolve these issues in a timely manner or reschedule your appointment if needed/possible.
  • Resolving Conflict: If a conflict arises during a tutoring appointment, please email LSC [at] mohawkcollege.ca or call 905-575-1212 ext. 3279.
  • Behaviour Agreement: By signing up for a Mohawk College LSC account, you agree to the above LSC policy and behaviour expectations.
    • If concerns arise, you will be expected to speak with a member of the LSC staff:
      • Warning: In most cases, you will first receive a written or verbal warning of any behaviours that go against LSC policy.
      • Account Hold & Review: If the behaviour continues or if additional LSC policies are not followed, your tutoring account will be placed on hold. This is used as an interim measure to address concerns. You will need to speak with the LSC Manager or a member of the LSC staff. That conversation will allow you the opportunity to share your perspective on events. The outcome of the conversation will be to determine the length of your account hold.
      • Account Suspension: If the behaviour continues or if additional LSC policies are not followed, your tutoring account will be suspended for a period of 1-4 months. You will need to speak with the LSC Manager or a member of the LSC staff. That conversation will allow you the opportunity to share your perspective on events. The outcome of the conversation will be to determine the length of your account suspension.
      • Account reactivation: After the account suspension period, you will meet with the manager to regain access to LSC services.
