Students applying for a Study Permit

First Time Study Permit Applicants

Students applying for a Study Permit for the first time, will need to apply through a local Canadian Embassy or Consulate, outside Canada. Please visit Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (opens new window), for a list of Canadian Consulates and Embassies abroad.

Students applying for a new permit will need to submit:

  • Passport
  • Mohawk College Letter or Acceptance
  • Proof of financial support for at least one year of academic study (approximately $20,000).

Student Pending Visa Approval – Visa Status Updates

June 2021 - In response to the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) decision to allow students to study prior to formal visa approval, Mohawk College will allow students to register from their home country and begin virtual classes in Fall 2021 pending visa approval from IRCC. Students submitting an application to study pending visa approval will need to submit their Letter of Submission from IRCC or confirmation of their Approval in Principle (AIP) through the online request form sent to all students. This form acknowledges their understanding of the terms and conditions associated with their registration. Following the submission students will receive details on how to register and select their timetable.

 

There is no guarantee that a student will receive their full visa approval. Students should refer to their acknowledgment for specific refund information. Should you require an additional copy of the refund policy, or have any questions regarding it and/or withdrawing please contact international.services [at] mohawkcollege.ca. Students studying pending visa approval have 5 business days to notify Mohawk College of any decision by IRCC, whether approved or denied. Student who are appealing the IRCC decision can remain in classes during the appeal process but must indicate this to the International Student Services team.

Student Direct Stream (SDS)

Important update for applicants from India only:

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continues to offer the Study Direct Stream (SDS) for students from India. Students wishing to apply through the SDS program will have to meet the following criteria:

1. Provide Academic IELTS results with an overall 6.0 as well as a 6.0 for all sub-bands, listening, reading, writing and speaking
2. Provide a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of $10,000 as proof of ability to self-support
3. Provide proof of tuition payment for the first year

Mohawk College continues to maintain alignment with the SDS processing standards. All student applications from India are required to meet these academic standards to be considered for admissions.

Any applications that do not meet these standards will not be processed. 

We will share any additional updates to the new SDS program as they are communicated with us by IRCC.
