We understand that COVID-19 has had a profound impact on employers with respect to hiring and retaining co-op students. We are committed to adapting our co-op process throughout the COVID-19 Crisis by:

All co-op department staff members are working remotely and are available by phone or email to answer any questions you might have. Office hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Spring 2020

When does spring term start?

The spring/summer co-op work term is scheduled to start on May 4, 2020 for all co-op programs. The only exceptions are the Manufacturing Engineering Technician - Automation and the Electrical Engineering Technician - Power programs, which will start on June 1, 2020.

Can start dates be flexible?

We understand that flexibility may be needed with respect to student start dates. Please contact your Co-op Specialist to discuss your organization’s specific requirements.

Can co-op work terms be shorter in length?

Students working during the spring/summer term can obtain a co-op credit if they work a minimum of 8 weeks, but students must work a minimum of 10 weeks in order for employers to access the Ontario Co-operative Education Tax Credit. We encourage employers to contact their Co-op Specialist to discuss customized work term delivery models.

Can students work from home?

We fully support our employers allowing students to work from home, where possible.

How can I post a job?

Please indicate in the posting if the role is expected to work from home, the nature of the work environment, and the COVID-19 safety protocols in place for the student to safely and confidently assume the role.

How will student interviews be conducted?

We are happy to assist you in setting up your telephone or web-based interview. For web-based interviews, please provide the platform (Zoom, Skype) and any additional instructions for the students. Please note that no in-person interviews will be scheduled at this time.

Will COVID-19 protocols need to be in place?

Our students’ safety is of utmost importance and we encourage our students to closely follow their employer’s safety protocols for COVID-19, as well as those established by Public Health. We are asking all employers to provide clear and specific instructions and procedures related to COVID-19, as they pertain to the student’s role, as well as confirm with the Co-op Specialist that these directives have been communicated to their co-op student(s).

What happens if a student no longer feels safe to work?

For co-op students who do not feel safe continuing to work on-site, we ask that the student speak with their supervisor and their Co-op Specialist to establish next steps. The Co-op department will support any co-op student that opts not to start or complete their spring/summer co-op work term due to COVID-19 safety concerns.

What funding options or tax incentives are available for employers?

The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy covers 75% of salaries for qualifying businesses, for up to 3 months, retroactive to March 15, 2020. Employers of all sizes and across all sectors are eligible, with the exception of public sector entities.

The Student Work Placement Program (SWPP) Provides employers with wage subsidies of up to $7,000 per each Canadian student work term.

Co-operative Education Tax Credit Businesses can claim 25% of eligible expenditures, while small businesses can claim 30%, up to a maximum credit of $3,000 per work term placement.

Work-Sharing Agreements The Government of Canada has introduced temporary special measures that extend the maximum duration from 38 weeks to 76 weeks.

Canada Summer Jobs Program The Canada Summer Jobs program will help employers hire summer staff and provide young Canadians access to the jobs they need during this unprecedented time. This program will help create up to 70,000 jobs for youth between 15 and 30 years of age.
