The following is a list of courses we have run in the past to give you an idea of what programs we may run in the future.

Skilled Trades, Manufacturing, and Logistics

  • Careers at the Port (non-credit course) 
    • Explore in-demand career opportunities in manufacturing, distributing, and more. Learn how developing your essential skills, completing academic up-skilling, and understanding workplace culture can help you get a job and rise through the ranks.
    • This non-credit course is delivered in partnership with the Hamilton Port Authority.

 

  • Drafting Fundamentals
    • Learn the basics of drafting in the fields of architectural, construction, civil, and transportation engineering. Learn to read blueprints and techniques for line work, lettering, dimensioning, sketching, and drawings assembly. 
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a credit towards Engineering Technology programs at Mohawk. 
    • Made possible by a generous grant through the Hamilton Community Foundation's Edith H. Turner Foundation.

 

  • Explore Careers in Goods Movement (non-credit course)
    • Connect and engage with employees to learn about in-demand career opportunities in road, rail, air and port.
    • Earn a micro-certification that demonstrates a strong work-ethic in the workplace.

 

  • Foundations of Horticulture
    • This course is an excellent starting point for those interested in a career in the horticulture and landscaping field.
    • Learn about career opportunities in this field, and develop skills to assist in the maintenance of outdoor gardens and garden structures.
    • Learn how to identify, select and care for plants, turf, shrubs and trees. 

 

  • Green Building Technologies
    • This awareness-raising course introduces learners to green building technologies and the range of skills needed for employment opportunities in this growing sector.
    • Reinforces the need to create sustainable communities to address climate change by leveraging the work of the Canada Green Building Council and industry best practices.

 

  • Introduction to Construction
    • Get comfortable working with tools on plumbing, carpentry, and electrical projects. This course is great for people looking to build confidence working on home improvement or to discover a career in the skilled trades. 
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a credit towards a Continuing Education certificate.

 

  • Introduction to Construction for Women
    • Get comfortable working with tools on plumbing, carpentry, and electrical projects. This course is great for people looking to build confidence working on home improvement or to discover a career in the skilled trades.
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a credit towards a Continuing Education certificate. 

 

  • Introduction to Construction Engineering Technician 
    • Delivered in partnership with the City of Hamilton's Xperience Annex for adults aged 18-29, this mini-program gives you an introduction to Mohawk's Construction Engineering Technician diploma program with two courses and complimentary workshops.
    • Tech Skills Theory gives you a foundational knowledge of tools and safety. Trade Calculations boosts your math skills and gives you the chance to apply them directly to solve a construction related problem.
    • In addition to the two credits earned towards the Construction Engineering Technician program at Mohawk, students also participate in workshops to develop life and employment skills.

 

  • Landscape Maintenance and Employability Skills
    • This course is designed to increase awareness of careers in landscaping and grounds maintenance.
    • Gain practical skills that will give you the confidence to apply for entry level positions in the landscape profession with a focus on landscape maintenance.

 

  • Welding
    • Get an introduction to the hands-on skills and theory of welding, a transferable skill across many trades and industries. Basic safety equipment is provided.
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a course exemption from the Manufacturing Engineering Technician program at Mohawk. 

 

  • Women in Meat
    • Inspired by the MeatBusinessWomen professional association, the Women in Meat program is designed to encourage and nurture female talent throughout the sector through networking, education and mentorship.
    • A broad overview of the meat industry with an emphasis on skills development in meat cutting as an entry point into the field

 

Human Services

  • Bodies: The Social Construction
    • This course will explore the social construction of body image and the impact of the diet industry.
    • Course topics will include diet culture, the body positivity movement, weight stigma on social media, and being healthy at any size.
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a general education credit toward select college programs!

 

  • Child Development and Behaviour 
    • Part of the Early Childhood Education diploma program.
    • Examine the normal growth and development patterns of children. Learn about milestones, behaviours, and emerging skills from a developmental perspective. 
    • Upon successful completion, students receive a credit toward the ECE diploma!

 

  • Family Dynamics 
    • Part of the Early Childhood Education Program of Studies.
    • Explore the relationship between the individual and the family and the meaning of family within a socially diverse context. Examine the dynamics, changes and challenges within families, and enhance self-awareness regarding personal experiences, beliefs and values.
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a credit in the Social Service Worker diploma program.

 

  • Group Dynamics 
    • Part of the Social Service Worker diploma program.
    • Test your ability to complete tasks while depending on other people. Reflect on your perceptions, personality, and attitude when working with others.
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a credit toward Mohawk College Human Service programs!

 

  • Health, Safety, and Nutrition
    • Part of the Early Childhood Education diploma program.
    • This course focuses on the health and safety of young children in a childcare environment, healthy eating, and strategies to manage personal stress.
    • Upon successful completion, students receive a credit toward the ECE diploma!

       

  • Helping Professions Career Discovery
    • Explore careers in Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Care, Educational Support, Social Service Worker, Health, Wellness & Fitness, Community & Justice Services, Recreation Therapy, and Personal Support Worker. 
    • Attend interactive talks by helping professionals working in the field to understand better the type of work and education pathways needed to pursue that career.
    • Upon successful completion, students will earn a digital badge for demonstrating communication skills.

 

  • Human Service Career Discovery
    • Part of the Human Service Foundation certificate program.
    • Investigate various human service sectors as they relate to the career potential available in the industry. 
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a credit towards the Human Service Foundations certificate. 

 

  • Introduction to Child and Youth Care 
    • Prepare for a job in the field of Child and Youth Care by learning about the development of the profession and studying current trends.
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a credit in the Child and Youth Care program. 

 

  • Intro to Social Service Worker
    • This course introduces you to the profession of social service work.
    • Examine the social structures that influence people's lives and how various sources and forms of oppression shape individuals, families and communities.
    • Upon successful completion, students will earn a credit towards the Social Service Worker program. 

 

  • Sociology for Social Service Workers
    • This course examines the problems and social issues in society, and how they influence human behaviour.
    • This course explores various sociological perspectives to gain a better understanding of how society affects people, and challenge common sense perspectives about social life.

  • Accounting
    • Examine the role of accounting and its relationship to management
    • Learn to prepare financial statements to determine the financial position of a business

    • Learn a variety of strategies for success in business such as personal strengths, study and work habits, and communication skills.
    • Plan a career path by choosing a program major that matches personal skills to the requirement of the profession.

  • Computers for Business
    • Students will develop and enhance their skills using Microsoft Office for work and for personal organization.
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a credit toward select Business programs at Mohawk College!

 

  • Creative Team 
    • Part of the Broadcasting - Television and Communications Media diploma program.
    • Learn what it takes to produce a studio-based interview show. Participate in studio roles such as writing, directing, and production planning. 
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a credit toward Mohawk College media and broadcasting programs! 

 

  • Digital Photojournalism 
    • Learn practical skills for journalism and apply photography skills to a variety of scenarios. This course includes a strong practical component with a focus on fieldwork.
    • Upon Successful completion, students will receive a credit toward select Creative Industries programs at Mohawk College!

 

  • Introduction to Business 
    • Learn about how businesses in Canada operate. Study the basics of management and business organization and structure. 
    • Upon successful completion, earn a credit toward the Business Foundations certificate at Mohawk College!

    • Part of the Marketing Diploma program
    • Explore the foundational concepts of marketing, including key concepts such as market segmentation and target marketing, environmental analysis, and the marketing mix: price, product, promotion and place.

    • Part of the Advertising and Marketing Communications advanced diploma program
    • Investigate the basics of advertising layout and art direction from theoretical and practical perspectives.
    • Upon successful completion, students receive a credit toward the Advertising and Marketing diploma program!

       

  • Professional Administrative Skills
    • Identify the skills required of an administrative professional and apply these administrative skills to a variety of situations.
    • Upon successful completion, students receive a credit toward the Office Administration programs at Mohawk College.

 

  • Small Business Foundations
    • In this non-credit course, students will build confidence to start a new business.
    • Improve presentation skills while learning to develop and deliver a business pitch.
    • Upon successful completion, students will earn a City School Micro Certification

Health Sciences

  • Careers in Community & Long Term Care (non-credit)
    • Explore in-demand and exciting career opportunities in the community and long-term care sector.
    • Students will update their customer service training, develop knowledge and essential skills, dive into case studies and participate in a job fair.
    • Learn how to improve your soft skills and better understand workplace culture to help you get a job and rise through the ranks.
    • Developed in partnership with the Thrive Group who is committed to building a community of quality and responsive services in the health care system.
  • Foundations of Pharmaceutical Products
    • Part of the Community Pharmacy Assistant Certificate program.
    • Recognize the fundamental concepts of pharmaceutical products such as drug development and approval, drug naming, the role of manufacturers, routes of administration, and dosage forms. 
    • Upon successful completion, students receive a credit toward the Community Pharmacy Assistant Certificate!
  • Introduction to Health and Wellness
    •  Learn the basic dimensions to staying healthy, and how to take a balanced approach to lifestyle choices that impact your health. Participate in experiential learning opportunities with Hamilton Health Sciences Staff.
    • This course is offered in partnership with Hamilton Health Sciences at the Hamilton General Hospital. Please note that immunization clearance is required, with support provided free-of-charge by Hamilton Health Sciences.
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a credit toward Mohawk College's Health, Wellness and Fitness program of studies
  • Personal Support Worker
    • Determine the role of the PSW in caring for families or individuals within a family.
    • Explore safe practise guidelines in relation to infection control, body mechanics and the moving/positioning of clients.
    • Develop effective communication strategies to employ when working with clients and as a member of the inter-professional health team.
    • Enhance your employability skills through career-specific workshops and prepare for a career in community and long term care.

 

  • Residential Settings: Culinary and Environmental Services
    • Develop culinary and environmental services skills from industry professionals.

  • Advocacy and Community Social Action
    • Address a variety of social issues in Hamilton. Learn how to have a meaningful impact in your community by engaging in community building and advocacy.
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a general education credit toward select college programs!

 

  • Analyzing Video Games 
    • This course teaches critical and analytical reading, writing and speaking skills at a college level by studying major video games. This course focuses on the critical analysis of the development and impact of all kinds of video games, as well as the communities which have formed around and within those games.
    • Upon successful completion, students receive a credit toward a mandatory Writing and Communication course at Mohawk College.

 

  • College 101 
    • Students learn what to expect in a college or university environment, with special focus on time and stress management, overcoming barriers, critical thinking, and planning next steps.
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a general education credit toward select college programs! 

 

  • Environmental Sustainability 
    • Analyze how your consumption habits affect your community, determine your ecological footprint, and study the complex environmental problems our society faces.
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a general education credit toward select college programs!

 

  • Explore Careers in Food and Beverage Processing
    • Explore potential career and educational pathways related to Food and Beverage Processing in Hamilton and area.
    • Demonstrate effective work ethic skills that have been identified as a ‘high demand’ by our employer partners.
    • Participants have an excellent opportunity to network with employers in the industry and learn about the types of entry-level positions available. Guest speakers come to discuss their positions and how they use key skills at work.

 

  • Indigenous College 101 
    • Get started on a path to college! Learn what to expect in a college environment with special focus on time and stress management, overcoming barriers, critical thinking, and planning next steps.
    • This course was developed in partnership with Six Nations Polytechnic and provides a holistic approach to education and includes traditional and cultural teachings.
    • Upon successful completion, students receive a general education elective credit toward different programs at Mohawk!
    • Delivered in partnership with the Hamilton Regional Indian Centre

 

  • Me, We, Community
    • Examine evidence-based Positive Psychology interventions that aim to increase personal well-being.​
    • Identify how the relationships-pathway including the aspect of altruism is related to personal and other-oriented well-being.​
    • Investigate social problems and various forms of prejudice and discrimination, with a focus on the Hamilton context.​
    • Examine the context of community social action, and develop a sense of social community awareness.​
    • This is a General Education course and can be applied to various Mohawk College programs.

 

  • Popular Culture 
    • Students will examine modern popular culture (TV, advertisements, music, clothing, etc.) and its impact on society. Analyze who controls the media; the consumers, the producers or both? Question and analyze the impact of consumerism on the world, and examine the possibility of consumers rising up to take their culture back.
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a general education credit toward select college programs!

 

  • Popular Music & Society
    • This course traces today's popular music back to the roots of rock and roll. Explore and research the influence that your favourite artists have had on popular music and culture.
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a general education credit toward select college programs!

 

  • Positive Psychology
    • Explore various pathways to well-being, as we learn evidence-based strategies with roots in the science of Positive Psychology.
    • Discover ways in which you can improve your mindset, increase self-awareness and self-understanding, cultivate flourishing relationships, practice self-care, and align your life with your values and purpose.
    • Upon successful completion, students will receive a general education credit toward select college programs!

Building Positive Skills for School

In this non-credit course, you will learn how to connect with those around you through problem solving and effective communication. Participants will develop skills that will help them be successful in a postsecondary classroom.

Explore career opportunities and learn what it takes to build websites and create apps! 
This 12-week intensive boot camp runs daily with weekly guest speakers, hosted in partnership with the Industry Education Council of Hamilton.

Electrical and Electronic Circuits 

Welcome to the exciting world of electronics! This Learning Lab series gives an introduction to Electrical and Electronic Circuits through the construction of small projects. By the end of the series, students will be able to assemble and test circuits from a schematic. 

Helping Professions Career Discovery

In this 21-hour non-credit course, participants will attend interactive talks by helping professionals working in the field to learn about the type of work and education pathways needed to pursue that career. Explore careers in Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Care, Educational Support, Social Service Worker, Health, Wellness & Fitness, Community & Justice Services, Recreation Therapy, and Personal Support Worker.

Introduction to Cybersecurity

In this micro-credential course, you will become equipped with the tools and best practices to protect your data against common cyber crime tactics and learn what to do if your device or account has been compromised.

Job Ready Toolkit

This six-part series focuses on essential skills for landing and keeping a job! 
Topics include Skills Profile, Cover Letters and Resumes, Interview Skills, Building Relationships, Dealing with Difficult People, and Leadership.

Receive a certificate of completion for each 4-week session and a program completion certificate for successfully completing all six parts.

Office Administration Career Discovery

In this course, participants will gain an entry-level understanding of the professions available to them through interactive talks by administrative professionals working in the field. Participants will learn about the type of work and education pathways needed to pursue these careers.

STEM* Boost for Women (*Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)

This course eases you into science and math basics to boost your confidence with key skills for success in STEM-related education and work. Students will explore the diverse world of work in STEM fields, with a focus on Biotechnology, one of the most rapidly expanding fields of work in Canada. With this awareness, we’ll help you build a plan to reach your STEM career and education goals!
