One year or less
Become an Augmented (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) developer in just eight months and gain hands-on experience working on real-life projects for customers.

Program Highlights

  • Mohawk College has partnered with EON Reality to create the EON Virtual Reality Innovation Academy at Mohawk. This new facility offers applied learning in the exciting field of AR/VR, and is the first of its kind in Canada.
  • Learn the fundamentals of design and production of AR/VR environments which can be applied to various industries including entertainment, marketing, training and education, and gaming.

What is AR/VR?

Augmented Reality (AR) is characterized by the incorporation of digital information including images, video and audio into real-world spaces. It blends reality with the virtual environment allowing users to interact with both physical and digital objects.

Virtual Reality (VR) enables users to step into an immersive, computer-simulated alternate world where sensory experiences can occur. Current VR technology most commonly uses either head-mounted devices such as Oculus Rift, HTC Vive or fully immersive projection screens.

Is AR/VR for me?

The ability to perform many of the cross-disciplinary functions for AR/VR and interactive digital media is dependent on being creative while also having a firm understanding of the underlying technology. The selected candidates will be highly motivated with an aptitude for developing creative and interactive digital content. A background in computer science, engineering, gaming, visual arts, digital media, or similar is ideal but not essential..

What you’ll learn

  • Fundamentals of 2D/3D modeling and content creation specific to AR/VR.
  • Fundamentals of Javascript for creating interactive content specific to AR/VR.
  • Deploy interactive content on the latest mobile and immersive technology platforms including HTC Vive, Microsoft Hololens and Oculus Rift.
  • Work with a client in a team project-based format to solve a real-life challenge that is suitable for an AR/VR solution.

Learning Outcomes

Program Learning Outcomes, often referred to as ‘Program Standards', set out the essential learning that a student must achieve before being deemed ready to graduate.

In many cases these program learning outcomes were developed by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) in consultation with employers and educators who are experts in the program field. To ensure the outcomes remain current and in line with industry needs, we invite our employers, graduates working in the field and current students to re-examine and update them during regular, ongoing program review focus groups.
