Entrepreneurship In The Classroom

The future of work is entrepreneurial

Entrepreneurship activities can include anything from starting a business to inventing a product, from creative freelancing to running a skilled trades business. Additionally, employers are now looking to hire entrepreneurial thinkers to become intrapreneurs within their organization.

At The Centre for Entrepreneurship we look to develop entrepreneurial graduates and believe that all students have the opportunity to act entrepreneurially whether its through creating a business or taking entrepreneurial skills into their careers. Through workshops facilitated by The Centre, we help to develop the entrepreneurial mindset of Mohawk students in all programs of study.

The entrepreneurial mindset is a way of adaptable thinking and decision-making in complex, uncertain and dynamic environments.  The six characteristics of an entrepreneurial mindset are:

  • Learning from mistakes
  • Risk taking
  • Adding value
  • Searching for innovative ideas.
  • Adaptability and optimism
  • Grit and perseverance

In addition to the services and support below, we also are available to work individually with faculty and staff at all Mohawk campuses.

Refer Students or Alumni

Client Intake Form: If you have a student or alumnus with an existing business, a potential business idea or a class project that they may want to turn into a new business, they can receive free entrepreneurship coaching from SURGE and be connected to expert mentors and startup funding.

The Collective: The Collective helps Mohawk creative students establish their freelancing careers, by connecting them to clients interested in hiring them. Open to students and alumni by faculty referral only.

Enactus Mohawk: Many students are entrepreneurial thinkers but not ready to launch their business immediately. Enactus is a global community of entrepreneurial leaders who see business as a way to address social issues. Students will work on projects dedicated to solving the UN’s 12 sustainability challenges and build a stronger network with business leaders from across the country.

Pitch it to Win It: At SURGE’s flagship pitch competition students will pitch their business idea to a panel of local entrepreneurs and business experts, for a chance to win business advice, cash prizes and more.
