This acknowledgement of completion consists of three introductory courses which provide students with an opportunity to study addiction, co-occurring addiction and mental health disorders and explore assessment and treatment options. This acknowledgement may be taken for general interest or by students who are exploring a career in this field. These courses are also suitable for individuals working in social services agencies or health care settings who are interested in learning more about how to support individuals with addiction or concurrent disorders.

Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.

Recommended Requirements

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    Students who struggle with communication or whose first language is not English are encouraged to explore upgrading options available through our Applied Communications Centre.
  • Computer Skills (e.g. word processing, data management, internet access)
    Students should be familiar with computers, word processing, and email based systems prior to considering these courses. To upgrade computer skills, consider a CE introductory 'Computer Basics' course or a Learning Support Centre workshop before applying.

Course Description

Introduction to Concurrent Disorders - HMNS10034

Learn about co-occurring addiction and mental health issues. Define a concurrent disorder, understand the importance of addressing concurrent disorder issues, examine your attitudes and values, develop knowledge of treatment options and understand the importance of the therapeutic relationship.

Introduction to Mental Health (ACD) - HMNS10037

Learn about mental health disorders including prevalence, assessment and treatment options. Explore recent trends in mental health service delivery.

Introduction to Addictions - HMNS10039

Gain a basic understanding of addictions including prevalence, diagnoses, assessment and treatment. Current issues and trends in the field will be explored.
