The Joyce Family Foundation is making history at Mohawk College with a $5-million investment in technology and infrastructure.

The multi-million-dollar pledge by the Joyce family will be used to help fund a massive renewal of Mohawk’s labs and classrooms —about 30,000 square feet — as well as the construction of a 90,000-square-foot facility, named The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation.

The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation will include state-of-the-art labs, workshops, lecture theatres, industry training centres and showcases under one iconic roof. More than a bold aesthetic statement, the Centre embodies Mohawk’s vision to be the environmental leader our students, staff and partners expect. Designed to meet the highest “green” standards, the Centre will be a Net-Zero energy building, producing as much or more energy as it consumes.

The building itself will be a living lab whose exposed infrastructure will enable students to learn about advanced energy management and green building techniques, and to conduct applied research. The new knowledge they generate for Mohawk College, industry partners and the community, will help to create a more sustainable future we can all share.

“Mohawk College is nearest and dearest,” said Steven Joyce, trustee of The Joyce Family Foundation and the son of Ron Joyce. “The programs supporting colleges that really do on-the-job training and work force training ready for employment is key for development of youth across the country. “We’re not getting manufacturing jobs back. We’re getting more technology related jobs and this is geared towards training people for those types of jobs,” Joyce added. “Hopefully we attract talent from not just the Hamilton area but from further away to look at Hamilton as a growing, vibrant city that has something to offer.”

The new five-level Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation is expected to be substantially complete by spring 2018.
