Rallying support

Donna Moreau wanted to take action on the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation and her colleagues in Student Life joined the cause

Homeward Bound is a four-year-old transition program at the Hamilton Regional Indian Centre that supports at-risk single Indigenous mothers as they work to achieve educational goals and economic self-sufficiency.

Mohawk College is an educational partner in Homeward Bound, says Amanda White, manager of Indigenous Student Services.

“We work as a unit to support students throughout their journey through any academic upgrading and through their programs of choice. We aim to make the transition as smooth as possible and to help participants so that they just have to focus on their studies.”

Donna Moreau, Program and Services Coordinator in Student Life, wanted to show support for the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation by taking action. She reached out to her four colleagues in the department who all supported making a donation to Homeward Bound. The group hopes to make it a yearly contribution.

“I’m a new mother and I can’t imagine the stress of feeling you can’t do enough to support your family. It’s heartbreaking. Every donation, even small ones, can make a difference,” says Moreau.

“We are happy to voice our support for our Indigenous students,” says Claire Webber, who works in Student Life.

That is invaluable, says White.

“It will allow these students to continue to move forward in their lives, and supports our work to get them to where they want to be.”
