Success of Skilled Trades Campaign

Skill trades students around a table

Thank you for helping us raise $202,880 for skilled trades education at Mohawk College.

For the third year, we were fortunate to have, the Steeves Family offer to match every donation dollar for dollar up to $50,000. “Giving back to our community is not only a family core value but a foundational part of the DNA of McDonald’s,” said Drew Steeves, who is an Owner/Operator of several Hamilton McDonald’s restaurants.

“Our family has significant connections to Mohawk College as my mother, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends have attended the school and credit their success to their educations in Nursing, Business Marketing, Police Foundations, Computer Systems and Apprenticeship programs. They've gone on to build their own companies and rise through the ranks of RBC, Universal McCann, Dofasco and Stelco.”

This year's fall campaign featured several new ways for donors to get involved.

Alumni stepped up to help spread the word about the campaign across social media platforms. For every like, comment and share of the campaign posts using #MarshallConnectsGives, Marshall Connects donated $10 up to $5,000. It took us just 5 days to achieve 500 engagements on social media.

Two corporate partners, michael+clark construction and Melrose Paving Inc. participated as our “Power Hour Supporters.” Their gifts of $1,000 each provided donors with an additional incentive to give on a specific day during the lunch hour. At the end of the hour, the fund that received the most money in the power hour received the corporate donation.

Again this year, the amazing faculty and staff of Mohawk College showed up for us – in hard hats and sparkles.

College employees teamed up in the first Power Hour brick build event. Who doesn’t love LEGO? Teams were challenged to highlight as many skilled trade disciplines into their brick build and share on social media using #MohawkPowerHour. Leading up to the holidays Lorna Somers, Executive Director of the Mohawk College Foundation, challenged employees to wear sparkles to showcase their festive spirit at campus events. For every captured sparkle in our event photo area, Lorna donated $5. Over 267 employees participated, raising $1,335 for the campaign.

Canada urgently needs skilled trade workers and Mohawk College is one of the largest skilled trade trainers in the country and continues to be part of the solution to the problem. This campaign has enabled us to ensure students in the programs have the required tools for the trades and scholarships and bursaries to support their financial needs. Funds will also enhance green skills technology available in the classroom, and provide opportunities for women, in-risk youth, and other underrepresented members of our community to explore skilled trades and to encourage primary and secondary students to consider pursuing a skilled trades education.

We are truly grateful to everyone who participated in the campaign. Thank you.
