Organization Summary: Founded in 1991, Habitat for Humanity Hamilton is an independent, not-for-profit housing program that works to break the cycle of poverty by building affordable housing and promoting homeownership. 

Habitat for Humanity implements an on-going development model called the Home Build Program. Within this program, we build homes and provide interest-free and geared-to-income mortgages to eligible and deserving families who otherwise could not afford homeownership. 
Job Purpose: The Construction Associate assists our Construction Supervisor and Construction Lead Hand with various job tasks at our Catharine Street build site. In addition to providing technical assistance, this individual also acts as an affiliate ambassador to the general public, trade contractors, and various corporate and community volunteers on our build site.

Primary duties

Job Title: Construction Associate – Student Position

Reports to: Building Services Manager

One position Commencing May 27, 2024, for 8 weeks, at 35 hours per week.

One position commencing May 27, 2024, for 16 weeks, at 35 hours per week.

The Construction Associate will work in the field and assist with the day-to-day operation of our construction site. They will assist with material procurement and delivery, participate in the day-to-day construction activities as directed, and help to organize, inspect, and maintain construction equipment. This role reports to our Building Services Manager but works along side our Construction Site Supervisor and Construction Lead Hand. For more information, please visit www.habitathamilton.ca

Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Support and take direction from the Manager of Building Services, Construction Supervisor, and/or Construction Lead Hand. 
  •  Report daily to the build site, as directed.
  •  Assist with daily job planning and work site set-up, including opening gates and inspecting and laying-out PPE, tools, and equipment.
  •  Aid, as necessary, with building material acquisition, loading, and transport.
  •  Operate hand and power tools and other construction equipment to safely complete assigned construction tasks.
  •  Aid in the supervision of volunteers and engage with others to help ensure a safe and positive build experience.
  •  Keep build site organized, tidy, and free from debris and clutter.
  •  Adhere to provincial health and safety legislation and regulations and report on areas of health and safety concern.
  •  Help to close the build site each day including clean-up, waste/debris disposal, inspecting, sanitizing and returning tools and materials to their proper locations, and securing gates and fencing to deter theft.
  •  Explain the Habitat program to interested parties to promote our programming and further our mission.
  •  Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Experience Required
  • Basic understanding of residential construction. 
  • Self-motivated, outgoing personality with a positive attitude, attention to detail, and desire to generate a social impact in the Hamilton community.
  •  Ability to foster positive relationships with volunteers, trades, inspectors, build partners, and community members.
  •  Physically fit, able to operate construction tools and perform manual labour, including lifting and carrying heavy equipment and building supplies, in inclement weather conditions. 
  •  Time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  •  Sound judgement and ability to prioritize tasks.
  •  Ability to empathize with vulnerable populations.
  •  Organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  •  Ability to manage workload and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  •  Flexible, versatile, and tolerant of a changing work environments and deadlines.
  •  Access to a reliable vehicle and a valid G class license would be considered an asset.
  •  Provision of drivers abstract upon request.
  •  Willingness to work flexible hours, as necessary.
  •  Clean police check.
  •  As per the Canada Summer Jobs Grant, applicants:
    o Must be between 15-30 years of age
    o Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person to whom refugee protections has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act 2
    o Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
