Primary duties

This role will be key to the delivery of safe, rewarding and engaging volunteering opportunities with Habitat Hamilton. Our volunteer opportunities target members of our community and corporate fundraising teams. The Volunteer Services Intern will report to the Director of Affiliate Operations and work alongside our Volunteer Coordinator to ensure the successful delivery of volunteer opportunities at our ReStores and build projects. 

Role responsibilities include:

  • Actively participate in the planning and the execution of volunteer programming, including recruitment, onboarding, recognition and retention
  • Provide support in the delivery of build days for our corporate fundraising teams and community members at our various build sites throughout the City of Hamilton. Including:
    o Assisting volunteers through online onboarding
    o Preparing and sending email communications
    o Responsible for hospitality on sites for volunteers, morning coffee, lunch order, delivery and setting up 
    o Confidently deliver our Habitat talk with volunteers 
    o Answer questions related to the work Habitat Hamilton does in our community
  •  Provide support to our ReStore volunteers at our ReStore locations
  •  Ensure volunteers health and safety in partnership with build and ReStore staff
  •  Drive improvements and create opportunities to gather feedback for our volunteer programming
  •  Maintain volunteer records, update volunteer opportunities using our existing volunteer database
  •  Provide input on policies and procedures to Director
  •  Prepare activity and feedback reports for Director
  •  Participate in staff meetings
  •  Participate in local advocacy efforts related to volunteering and affordable housing
  •  Participate in events related to volunteer recruitment
  •  Monitor and track inventory related to execution of volunteer programming
  •  Support Affiliate Director with staff and volunteer events

Skills and Experience Required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle as you will be required to drive between sites each day. Mileage will be reimbursed as per our policy
  •  Must be able to safely work an active construction site
  •  Must be able to lift 10kg
  •  Must have experience as a volunteer
  •  Must have computer experience – Microsoft Office, Outlooks and preferable to have some database experience 
  •  Must be able to supply a successful vulnerable sector search
  •  Must be friendly, welcoming and be an ambassador for Habitat Hamilton
  •  Must be able to clearly communicate written and verbally
  •  Must be able to follow direction and ask for assistance when needed
  •  Must be able to work occasional Saturday’s and evenings (time in lieu provided)
  • As per the Canada Summer Jobs Grant, applicants:
    o Must be between 15-30 years of age
    o Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person to whom refugee protections has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act 2
    o Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
