Free English classes for newcomer youth - LINC Youth Media, Photography and Video program

Do you want to learn English for free and have fun creating photography and video projects?
The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Youth program might be for you!

In the LINC Youth program, you will:

  • learn English to feel more confident when communicating with others 

  • use the English you learn to create digital media projects, such as posters, photo stories and videos, with your friends in class 

  • create a digital portfolio of your amazing work 

  • develop online skills for success at college and work 

  • connect with valuable resources available at Mohawk College and get one-on-one professional support 


Full time classes available for students ages 18-25: 

  • LINC Youth Media (CLB 1-2)
  • LINC Youth Photography (CLB 2-3)
  • LINC Youth Video (CLB 4)
  • LINC Youth Advanced Digital Communication (CLB 5-6)

Full time classes available for students ages 18-25: 

  • LINC Youth Half-time (CLB 3-4)
    • Afternoon classes 3 days per week

Interested applicants must:

  • Be a permanent resident of Canada, a protected person (with Notice of Decision), or a temporary resident affected by the crisis in Gaza (showing “MOME2023” in status documentation until March 31, 2027), and
  • Be 18-25 years, and
  • Live in Ontario, (priority is given to eligible newcomers living in the Hamilton area) and
  • Have valid proof of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) assessment at the required level of the class of your interest

    • Don't have proof of CLB? Contact YMCA Immigrant Services to book an appointment to take the assessment: (905) 662-9400 or (905) 526-8452
    • The assessment has no cost for permanent residents and protected persons.

    Note: Unfortunately, effective April 1, 2025, Ukrainian temporary residents and their dependents are no longer eligible for IRCC-funded settlement services and language training programs including LINC and WPP. People who started a language class before March 31, 2025, can continue in the same level until the end of the academic year (June or July)

Technology required

Students need to have access to the following:

  • A high-speed internet connection.
  • A computer or laptop with a camera, microphone, and sound.
  • A comfortable place where you can interact with your classmates and teachers. This will help you to learn better and faster!
