Emily Baynes is a motivated young professional and proud graduate of Mohawk’s Public Relations program. Since graduating, she has applied her communications skills to the areas of economic development, education, child poverty, healthcare, sustainability and community engagement in the Hamilton area.

Throughout her career, Emily has remained committed to community-building, collaboration and mentorship. Emily has grown to be a well-rounded marketing, communications and public affairs practitioner, known for her strategic approach and ability to execute. 
Building on an internship with the City of Hamilton’s Economic Development department, Emily enjoyed two years at Mohawk College, where she worked as part of the Fennell Renewal team. In this position, Emily also played a key role in developing and launching the College’s award-winning Environmental Management Plan. 

Emily later joined the Redevelopment Office of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, where she worked as part of a diverse team that launched the hospital’s new forward-thinking West 5th Campus – a state-of-the-art $1 billion facility that integrates mental health and addictions care with medical care and diagnostics.

Following her time with St. Joe’s, Emily returned to Mohawk College to join the growing Sustainability Office where she led communications, and campus and community outreach initiatives for a unique portfolio of programs, services and special projects.

Emily had the opportunity to expand her leadership experience as Manager of Communications & Engagement with the Mohawk Students’ Association, providing strategic support to multiple business areas and leading a dynamic team responsible for student events, stakeholder consultation strategies, branding and communications, and organizational strategic planning.

She has since joined Hamilton’s only international law firm, Gowling WLG, supporting the office’s social impact strategy that aims to build relationships with clients, community and Hamilton’s public institutions with the goal of leveraging global networks and industry connections to drive economic success for Hamilton.

Outside of her professional experience, Emily is a founding member of Food4Kids Hamilton, a local charitable organization that provides a weekend supply of healthy food for at-risk children. She has provided leadership to the organization by acting in an executive capacity as Board Chair, and played a key role in program development, community outreach, identifying community partners, and in designing and developing the Food4Kids brand.
