Applying for a study permit and a visa (if required)

If you are planning to study in Canada, you will typically apply for your Study Permit first. As part of this application, a Temporary Resident Visa (Visa) may also be processed at the same time, depending on your country of citizenship.

Students applying for a Study Permit for the first time, will need to apply through a local Canadian Embassy or Consulate, outside Canada.

Find your Embassy on the Government of Canada Site

  1. Get Accepted to a DLI: Ensure your school is a DLI. You need a letter of acceptance (LOA) to start the process.
  2. Obtain a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL): Most applicants need a PAL from the province/territory where they intend to study to accompany their study permit application. Learn more about your PAL here.

Study Permit: Extending your permit

If you plan to continue your studies in Canada, you may need to extend your Study Permit to maintain your student status. You may need to apply for an extension if your permit will expire before completing your program or if your study plans change.

We recommend at least 90 days in advance.

  • Students whose study permit will be expiring are recommended to review the immigration Extend Study permit webpage for the processing times.
  • You can only extend your study permit if you are physically inside Canada.

PGWP frequently asked questions

Can I apply for a PGWP if I attend a program online from inside Canada?
  • You must complete at least 50% of your program in class inside Canada
  • The time spent studying outside of Canada will be deducted from the length of your PGWP
Can I be eligible if I am a part-time student in my final semester?

You must have continuously studied full-time in Canada. However, if you meet all the eligibility requirements, with the exception of full-time status during the final academic session, you are still considered eligible for this program and may work off-campus up to 24 hours per-week.

Can I work while waiting for confirmation from Mohawk College that I completed my program?
  • If you are eligible to work in your final term, you can continue working up to 24 hours a week off campus and/or full time on campus until the Grad List is posted or your Letter of Completion (PGWP Letter) becomes available, whichever happens first.
  • Once the Grad List is posted or your Letter of Completion becomes available, you’re no longer eligible to work and must stop working immediately until further action is taken.
  • If you are working after finishing your last program requirement, such as your last final exam, it is important to be aware of those dates.
What if I need a medical exam for my job?
  • If you are eligible to work in your final term, you can continue working up to 24 hours a week off campus and/or full time on campus until the Grad List is posted or your Letter of Completion (PGWP Letter) becomes available, whichever happens first.
  • Once the Grad List is posted or your Letter of Completion becomes available, you’re no longer eligible to work and must stop working immediately until further action is taken.
  • If you are working after finishing your last program requirement, such as your last final exam, it is important to be aware of those dates.
What if I am on maintained status?

If you plan to work in a job which requires a medical exam, you cannot start working in that position until you've received your work permit with correct conditions, however if you meet the above criteria you can work in other jobs which don't require a medical exam while you are waiting for your work permit.

I am waiting for my post-graduation work permit. Can I travel outside Canada and come back with my student permit?
  • You can leave Canada and return, as long as your visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is still valid. Your permit (study or work) is not a visa and doesn't allow you to travel back to Canada. If your visa or eTA is expired, you have to get a new one before you return to Canada. When you return to Canada:
    • You may enter as a student if your study permit is still valid.
    • If we approve your post-graduation work permit while you're away, you may enter as a worker.
    • If we're still processing your post-graduation work permit, you may enter as a visitor, and you can work without a work permit until we make a decision on your application.
  • A border officer will have some questions for you when you arrive back in Canada. The officer may ask you for proof that you applied for a post-graduation work permit, such as a copy of your application or the fee payment receipt.
  • If the officer believes there is reason to refuse your re-entry, you won't be able to enter Canada.
Can I work after I've applied for my PGWP?
  • After submitting your PGWP application online, you may immediately begin working full-time while your application is being processed if at the time you submit your application:
    • You have a valid study permit and apply within the first 90 days after the Grad List or your Letter of Completion first became available
    • You have completed your program of study
    • You were eligible to work off campus without a work permit during your studies
    • You did not work off campus for more than 20 hours per week up until November 8, 2024, and/or no more than 24 hours after November 8, 2024, during academic sessions (unless authorized)
  • Please note: Your study permit expires on whichever date comes first:
    • the date marked on the permit or
    • 90 days after the day you complete your studies
If a student has a gap during their study, can they request an explanation letter from the college to assist with their PGWP application?

The college does not provide explanation letters regarding any gaps during your study period. The student should write their own explanation letter to IRCC and include supporting documentation.

If a student studied part-time in the middle of the program, can the college provide a supporting letter?

The college cannot provide supporting letters. The student should write their own explanation letter to IRCC and include supporting documentation. The student can meet with their international student advisor to discuss their case.

Can I receive my completion letter (PGWP letter) earlier if my study permit will expire at the end of the term?

PGWP letters can only be issued after the Grad List is posted. If your study permit will expire before the grad list is posted, you must apply to extend your study permit at least 3 months before it expires so that you have enough time to apply for your PGWP.

Can I apply for a job before I get my post-graduation work permit?

Yes, but only if you:

  • were a full-time student at Mohawk College in a post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training program,
  • already completed your program of study, and
  • didn't exceed the number of hours you could work on and off-campus.
  • If IRCC refuses your post-graduation work permit, you must stop working immediately.
Can I work anywhere, in any type of job, under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program?

The post-graduation work permit is an open work permit. This means that you can work in any occupation anywhere in Canada, and change employers any time you wish. Note: You may not work for an employer on the ineligible employers list.

International student program changes (2024-2026)

These updates may affect study permit requirements, eligibility criteria, and post-graduation work opportunities. We are sharing a timeline of the major program updates

We're here to support you

We understand that changes to Canada's international student program may raise questions and concerns.

International students should be cautious of information or advice about these changes shared through social media or other unofficial channels. Government requirements can change, and information may become outdated quickly.

Mohawk College is committed to providing students with accurate, verified information and support throughout their journey.

For the most current immigration requirements, always refer to the Government of Canada's IRCC website.

April 2026 — Co-op and Work Placement Changes

As of April 1, 2026, post-secondary international students no longer need a separate co-op work permit for program-required work placements such as co-ops, field placements and practicums.

Students may complete co-op, placement or required work experiences using their study permit, provided they are enrolled full-time and their study permit includes the appropriate work authorization conditions (e.g., authorization to work on campus or on/off campus under R186)

  • Temporary policies for open work permits for PGWP holders were not extended beyond December 31, 2023.
  • As of January 1, 2024, a single study permit applicant was required to demonstrate $20,635 for the cost-of-living requirement, in addition to first-year tuition and travel costs.
