We understand new technology can feel overwhelming. The Alumni Office is here to help you feel at ease while participating in your virtual reunion.

Follow the steps below to learn some basic features of the Zoom platform using a laptop or desktop computer. 

Download the Zoom platform

Visit zoom.us/download

  • Under the Zoom Client for Meetings section, click on the blue download button
  • Click on the Zoom Installer box in the bottom left hand corner of your screen. This will automatically launch the installation on your computer.

Setting up a Zoom meeting

  • Sign into your Zoom account by visiting zoom.us and clicking Sign in. Enter your login details.
  • Once signed in to your account, in the top right corner, click on Schedule a meeting.
  • Fill out the required fields about your meeting including name, date and time.

  • Once the meeting is created, you can invite others by scrolling down the page and clicking Copy Invitation. Share these details in an email to your participants.

Joining a Zoom meeting

  • Click on the Zoom meeting link provided by the organizer. A new internet window will pop up with Zoom launching. If a meeting ID or password is required, input these details provided by the organized when prompted.

  • If you are early to the meeting, you may see a screen that says Please wait for the host to start this meeting.
  • Once the host has started the meeting, you will be prompted to Enter your name and then click to Join the meeting.

  • Click the blue button to Join with video (if you wish).
  • A new window will open for you with the open to Join with computer audio.
  • You are now in the meeting room!

Starting your video

When you are in the meeting, in the bottom left-hand corner, click on the Start Video button. Use this button to control when your camera is on or off.

Audio (speakers and microphones)

In the bottom left hand corner of your screen, click Unmute to turn your microphone on and off. Click the up arrow for more options including selecting headphones.

Chat feature

You can communicate with everyone by using the chat feature. At the bottom of your screen select the Chat button to send text messages to everyone. If you see a number in red on the Chat button you can read the messages people are posting.
