When he graduated from University in 2017, Joshua Simpson '20 realized he had no idea what career he wanted to pursue. Joshua majored in Criminology, but he quickly learned that he wanted to follow a different career path.

“I learned some valuable information in university but I felt I was lacking real world experience,” Joshua said. “I knew I had to go back to school, preferably college, to build skills that would be useful in the workforce. I just needed to determine what I wanted to go back to school for, and ultimately what I wanted to do for a living.”

“I decided it was best to take some time away from school, and I worked as a crane operator at a steel factory in Burlington,” Joshua said. He would spend each day thinking about his future, and what career would best suite him.

Soon enough, that path revealed itself. In November of 2018 Joshua took the opportunity to attend a Mohawk College Open House. “I was able to see what programs and services were offered,” Joshua said. “I became interested in the McKeil School of Business, and I quickly realized that Mohawk was the right fit for myself. I felt like combining a college diploma with a university degree would give me an advantage when applying for jobs.”

With the information he gathered from the Open House, Joshua decided to apply to the Fast-Track Business Marketing program. “I wanted to be able to complete my education as fast as possible to get back into the workforce,” Joshua said. “With the fast-track program, I was able to complete all four semesters in a row, without taking time off in the summer.” Thanks to the fast track program, I was able to get back to building my career in a year and a half,” Joshua said. “I was worried that going back to school would set me back, but the fast track program was able to propel me into a career path I wanted to pursue.

Joshua encourages other graduates who feel they need to upgrade their skill sets to check out fast track programs relevant to them. “The fast-track programs at Mohawk are perfect for people like me, who have already completed some form of post-secondary education,” Joshua said. “The fast-track programs are also great for people who have been out of school for a while but want to further their education and return to the workforce as quickly as possible.”
