Dr. Usha Vivegananthan is the Academic Coordinator and Professor in the Biotechnology programs at Mohawk College. In high school, she was inspired by a discussion of genetics and went on to obtain a B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from the University of Toronto. Her research work has focused on the genetic model organism C. elegans. She worked as a research scientist on cell fate determination in Canada and on DNA damage response genes for Cancer Research UK in London, England. Dr. Vivegananthan has worked in the field of post-secondary education for more than twenty years, including at the University of Toronto, McMaster University and most significantly at Mohawk College. Her work at Mohawk College has influenced academic programs, including the development of new programs focused on sustainability within the School of Climate Action. She has extensive lab and teaching experience with specialized interests in modern innovations in biotechnology to address sustainability and medical and industrial advancement. She is a passionate educator who strives for the success of her students.
