"Black Women Artists in Canadian Art History"
"Join McMichael Chief Curator Sarah Milroy and Gaëtane Verna, Director of The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, for a discussion on the history of art by Black Canadian women, viewed from the vantage point of their exhibition Denyse Thomasos: Odyssey. On the occasion of the McMichael’s concurrent exhibition Uninvited: Canadian Women Artists in the Modern Moment, Verna and Milroy will speak with McGill University doctoral scholar Adrienne Johnson about her research into this little known area of Canadian art history, and the challenges she faces in recovering these voices from the past. As well, Halifax artist Clara Clayton-Gough will speak about the baskets made by her grandmother Selena Irene Sparks Drummond of Cherry Brook, Nova Scotia, featured in the Uninvited exhibition."
