Thoughts on good citizenship

Canadian people and the Government of Canada opened their doors for newcomers and refugees a few decades ago to help them. This country has many organizations and centres to help people, especially newcomers, to start a new life. In this country you have a lot of great opportunities to achieve your goals, to build a new life easily and to adjust to Canadian society. At the same time, in order for all newcomers to be successful citizens, they should respect the culture and rules of the country such as completing your official papers on time and respecting the traffic laws and police. Respecting the culture is an important way to connect positively with people, build strong relationships with others and adjust to your new life. If you have respected the rules, regulations and laws in this country, you will be respected back and treated fairly.

Hala Mahmoud, a physician from Egypt and former LINC student, became a citizen this week.

Learning the language, studying and working are ways to achieve your goals and these actions will help you to be successful in your plan to build a new life. In addition, these are the best actions to take to help you become a good citizen. Throughout the past many successful newcomers have begun their lives here by doing these things.

Other important elements are paying tax and participating in volunteer acts. We should always remember that the services the government provides for us and others come from taxes. Paying taxes is important because the money goes toward funding many social programs for all Canadians and newcomers. Canadian citizens help to build their country's strong reputation around the world. All newcomers should participate by paying taxes and according to their ability, participating in volunteer acts. I believe that taking all of these actions not only contribute to being a good citizen, but they will also be helpful to becoming a Canadian citizen much more easily.
