Eric Vandewall

Eric Vandewall is President & CEO of Joseph Brant Hospital (JBH) in Burlington. Under Eric’s leadership several major accomplishments have been realized at JBH, and an ongoing focus to continue to improve quality care, safe care, and service excellence is evident throughout the hospital. Over the past 10 years, Joseph Brant Hospital received Accreditation with Exemplary Standing 3 times from Accreditation Canada. In addition, JBH recently completed the largest redevelopment and capital expansion project in the history of the hospital.

Prior to joining JBH, Eric served as the Senior Vice President, Trillium Health Centre, and Vice President of Planning and Corporate Services at Trillium Health Centre. Eric has held a number of other senior management positions including Director, Glaxo Welcome; Director, Health Reform Implementation Team, and Director, Health Promotion Branch, Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. He has held several other senior positions at the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care over an 11 year period. Eric is a graduate of Queen’s University and holds a master’s degree in Public Administration, Health Policy. He also has an undergraduate degree from Toronto Metropolitan University in Architectural Sciences and he holds a Chartered Director designation from the Directors College, McMaster University.

James Schlegel

James Schlegel is the CEO and Chair of Schlegel Health Care, overseeing Schlegel Villages, which provides long-term care, retirement, and assisted living for seniors, as well as Homewood Health, offering mental health and addiction services across Canada.

He also leads RBJ Schlegel, which includes Schlegel Poultry and Schlegel Urban Developments.

James chairs the Research Institute for Aging, whose mission is to enhance care and quality of life for older adults. One of their many innovations is the Living Classroom, including a partnership with Mohawk College through The Village of Wentworth Heights and The Village of Tansley Woods. He also serves on the Homewood Research Institute, advancing applied research in the area of mental health and addiction treatment.

Beyond his corporate leadership, James has served on many boards including the Grand River Hospital, University of Waterloo, Mennonite Economic Development Associates International and Ontario Health Team in Waterloo Region. He also served on committees established by the Ministries of Health and Long-Term Care to oversee the COVID-19 pandemic response. He continues to serve on committees advising the Ministry of Long-Term Care and Ontario Health.

James holds a Master of Accounting from the University of Waterloo and obtained his CA designation in 1992.

Keith Segal

Keith Segal is a visionary leader whose career bridges the worlds of creativity and business. As a graduate of Technical Theatre and Production at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute (known today as Toronto Metropolitan University), Keith began his professional journey behind the scenes—designing, building, and managing theatrical productions. This foundation in creative problem-solving and production logistics laid the groundwork for his entrepreneurial mindset and ability to think outside the box.

After 13 years in the Life and Health Insurance industry, Keith became Co-Founder, President and CEO of GuardMe International Insurance, helping shape one of the world’s leading student health insurance and mental support service providers. Starting in his basement along with his co-founder, they grew the company to a worldwide operation with more than 200 employees. Under his leadership, GuardMe became known for its personalized service, industry innovation, community involvement and strong institutional partnerships across the globe.

For nearly 30 years, Keith has made lasting contributions to the education sector by funding student programs, creating scholarships and bursaries, and supporting communities both locally and internationally. His unique blend of creative thinking and strategic leadership continues to make a real difference in people’s lives today.

Ron Foxcroft

Distinguished Fellow – Honorary Degree

Ron Foxcroft was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2019. He was named Entrepreneur of the Decade by Profit Magazine and named to the Burlington Entrepreneur Hall of Fame. He has been named Citizen of the Year in both Hamilton & Burlington. He received an Honourary Doctor of Laws from McMaster University.

He is a world-renowned basketball referee, including a distinguished career officiating NCAA Basketball and 23 seasons with the NBA. Ron officiated the 1976 Olympic Gold Medal Basketball Game. He enjoyed a distinguished career in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Division-1, highlighted by officiating Michael Jordan’s first college game. He was named by Referee Magazine as one of the 52 most influential persons in North American Officiating history. In 2016, the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO) named Ron the recipient of the esteemed Gold Whistle Award, which is the officiating industry’s highest honour bestowed on a referee.

Ron had an audience with the Queen at Buckingham Palace in 2015 when he was the Honourary Colonel of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.

Today, Ron serves as CEO of Fluke Transportation and Fox 40 International, and he is the Chair of the Hamilton John C Munro Airport.

Frank Gerencser

Frank Gerencser is the Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of triOS Education Group, the parent company of triOS College Business Technology Healthcare Inc., Eastern College Inc., and Lifecycle Systems Corporation. A proud graduate of the University of Waterloo with a degree in Systems Design Engineering, Frank was honoured with the Faculty of Engineering’s 2018 Alumni Achievement Medal for Professional Achievement.

His leadership and contributions to the private post-secondary education sector have earned him several prestigious recognitions, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the King Charles III Coronation Medal. Under his guidance, triOS Education Group formed a proud and impactful partnership with Mohawk College that helped expand opportunities for learners in Ontario at the Mississauga Campus.

Frank serves on multiple boards, including Career Colleges Ontario (CCO), where he advocates for innovation and quality in career-focused education. He is also a long-standing and active member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO), through which he continues to support and mentor fellow leaders in business and education.

Frank's career reflects a lifelong dedication to transforming education and empowering individuals to build brighter futures through practical, career-focused learning.

Sarah Vienot

Distinguished Fellow - Honorary Diploma

Sarah Vienot's journey began in Nova Scotia with entrepreneurial parents who encouraged her to embrace an unconventional career path. Her adventures led to Los Angeles, where she spent over a decade immersing herself in the entertainment industry, first working alongside legendary poet/songwriter Leonard Cohen and then as Co-Founder of The Alexander/Vienot Agency.

Her path to branding took shape during a seven-year tenure at Vibrato Naming. Now a principal executive at Fussfactory since its launch in 2008, Sarah leads social branding initiatives.

Sarah enhanced her expertise through Digital Marketing Management Certification from the University of Toronto and specialized training in brand strategy, innovation strategy, and viral growth through Section4.

As Board Chair for Community Living Central York, she demonstrates a commitment to building inclusive communities through supporting adults with intellectual disabilities. Sarah also serves as a Trustee of the Marinucci Family Foundation, founded and chaired by her husband, Giovanni Marinucci, which invests in education, live arts and proactive healthcare initiatives.

She and Giovanni split their time between Innisfil and Toronto, balancing their professional endeavours with their shared commitment to the Marinucci Family Foundation. They enjoy family life with their combined family of five children, two grandchildren, and their yellow lab, Marilyn.

Bruce MacRitchie

Distinguished Fellow

Bruce MacRitchie, a Canadian aviation pioneer, has dedicated over six decades to advancing the aerospace industry. Bruce’s early aviation experience began in the 1960s at Central Airways in Toronto, where he earned his wings.

His aviation career continued at Fort Erie’s Fleet Industries and then in California and Florida, where he became a certified helicopter pilot, airline pilot, and aircraft technician. He represented industry giants such as Hughes, Lockheed, and Douglas, and even flew alongside Howard Hughes himself. His adventures took him across North America and Europe, including a notable emergency landing in Haiti, where he went to jail for two weeks before being allowed to get parts for his aircraft, fix the plane, and fly it home.

Bruce went on to operate several aviation businesses and managed the Welland Airport for over 30 years, transforming it into a hub for pilot training and aircraft maintenance. At 91, he continues to fly today.

A long-time director and honorary board member of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, Bruce has been instrumental in preserving Canada's aviation history. In 2024, Bruce donated a 1968 Cessna C421 to Mohawk College's Centre for Aviation Technology as a sign of his dedication to aviation education.

Lauren Hough

Brain Disorders Management ‘19

Lauren Hough is a dedicated advocate in the field of brain injury and disability support. She holds a BA Honours in Psychology with a minor in Family and Child Studies from the University of Guelph (2011), a BSc in Biological Science (2016), and most recently, completed a Master of Arts in Applied Disability Studies with a specialization in Applied Behaviour Analysis in 2024.

Her career began at the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, where she spent six years training Autism Assistance Dog Guides and supporting families across the country. This experience fostered a deep commitment to advocating for individuals with disabilities, particularly those who face systemic barriers.

In 2019, Lauren completed a post-graduate certificate in Brain Disorders Management at Mohawk College. During her co-op placement with the Ontario Brain Injury Association (OBIA), she discovered a strong passion for supporting individuals living with brain injuries and she joined OBIA shortly thereafter. Today, as Assistant Director of Outreach and Programs, Lauren leads initiatives that provide essential resources, support, education, and advocacy for individuals and families across Ontario that have been impacted by brain injuries.

Adil Khalqi

Police Foundations ‘19, Advanced Police Studies ‘20

Adil Khalqi is making the most of his education. Just five years out of college, he is a Police Constable with the Brantford Police Service and a Town Councillor in the Town of Milton. In 2024, he was named a Mohawk Alumni of Distinction, and nominated for the Ontario Premier's Award.

After graduating Police Foundations in 2019 and Advanced Police Studies in 2020, Adil’s passion for public service led him towards being hired on as a Police Constable with the Brantford Police Service in 2021. He takes pride in the hard work that it takes to foster community safety and well-being.

Just one year after he became a Police Constable, he was nominated for a Police Association of Ontario Police Hero Award in the Community Role Model category. The award recognizes officers or civilian employees for going above and beyond the call of duty.

Adil extended his dedication to public service by running for Town Council in the 2022 Milton Municipal Election. He was elected in October 2022, becoming the youngest Councillor in Milton’s history.

On Council, Adil has focused on aligning the pace of growth with infrastructure and public service capacity, improving road safety, and supporting budgets that balance affordability with residents’ expectations for services. He has also championed strategic investments that strengthen the Town of Milton’s future. Adil is committed to building strong, positive relationships with residents and believes that listening and engaging with the community is essential to effective leadership and advocacy.

Matt Beel

Business - Travel and Tourism ‘95

Matt Beel is the Director of Field Sales in Canada for Stanley Black and Decker. He graduated from Mohawk College with a diploma in Travel and Tourism in 1995. During his time at Mohawk, Matt was a Mountaineer varsity athlete during his studies and played for the Men’s Volleyball team. He began his career at Regent Holidays and then in 2000 joined Stanley Black and Decker, holding several, increasingly senior positions in sales and marketing for a leader in the tool industry with some of the world’s most recognizable brands.

Matt resides in Burlington with his wife Kelly of 27 years. Their son Jack is a 2024 Mohawk College graduate from Electrical Engineering Technician – Power and son, Charlie, has just completed the first year of his marketing program at Mohawk.

Waleed Ahmed

Computer Systems Technician - Software Support ‘16  Computer Systems Technology - Software Development ‘17

Waleed Ahmed moved from Pakistan to Canada in 2013 to pursue a diploma in Computer Systems Technology – Software Development at Mohawk College. Since graduating in 2017, he has built a successful career in the tech industry and now works as a Senior Solutions Design Specialist, with over eight years of experience in full-stack software development.

Waleed has worked with leading organizations such as Hamilton Health Sciences, CIBC, Interac, and TD, as well as collaborating with global vendors including FINASTRA, CGI, TCS, Deloitte, and Devbridge. He specializes in JavaScript, DevOps, and secure payment technologies, and has led the delivery of innovative solutions for major enterprise clients. His expertise spans ISO 20022 standards, vulnerability remediation, disaster recovery, automation, and application reliability—leveraging tools such as Archer, ServiceNow, AppDynamics, Dynatrace, and Splunk.

Waleed is passionate about applying modern technology to solve complex problems and drive continuous innovation. As he returns to Mohawk College as an alumni speaker, he hopes his journey—from Pakistan to industry leader in Canada—inspires graduates to pursue their ambitions with curiosity, resilience, and confidence.

Jason Herd

Electrical Engineering Technician – Power ‘04   Electrician: Construction & Maintenance, Industrial Electrician ‘05

Jason Herd is an entrepreneur helping businesses in the trades be more efficient and maximize their profits.

Jason is founder and CEO of Tradetraks Inc., a Hamilton-based software provider that automates and streamlines the management operations, finances, health and safety, human resources and internal communications for construction and service trades industry companies.

In 2022 Jason was named among the top 40 under 40 by SiteNews, a construction trade publication, and in 2024, he was named a Mohawk Alumni of Distinction and nominated for the Ontario Premier's Award.

Before starting his own business, Jason grew his career at Fairway Electrical, working his way up from electrical apprentice, to project manager and estimator, to vice-president and director of business development, and finally serving as president.

When Jason tried to solve gaps in Fairway’s operational processes through technology, he couldn’t find a ready-made solution management application. So, he developed one himself, detailing the architecture and functionality of the application, assembling a Canadian-based team and creating Tradetraks.

Ashley Borzellino

Civil Engineering Technology ‘19

Ashley is a 2020 Mohawk College graduate with an Advanced Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology. She is a Certified Technician through OACETT and licensed OIT through Walkerton. Ashley has now been a Construction Inspector for over six years, in both the private and public sectors. She is also the winner and title holder of Miss Canada 2023, Canada’s longest-running national pageant, since 1946. She is a proud representative of Women in STEM and Women in Construction. Ashley was named Top 40 Under 40 Hamilton, through Business Link Media Group, and she was presented with an award from the City of Brantford for “Outstanding Achievements and Dedication to making a difference in the STEM Community”. Ashley has volunteered throughout her entire life, through extracurriculars and with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets for six consecutive years. She graduated as a Level Five Flight Sergeant and held the positions of Drum Major and Flight Commander.
