Celebrating Mohawk’s Success as a “Living Lab” for a Net-Zero Future

A group of students attend a CICan event.

In early March, the Sustainability Office held a week-long interactive display to help the College community understand and relate to the energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of buildings throughout campus. With a variety of elements including videos, informational panels, trivia, feedback questions, and snacks, the display drew in over 900 students, staff, and faculty!

Special thanks to Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) who funded the project, with support from the Government of Canada, through the ImpAct Climate Initiative.

The insightful conversations and feedback gained from the display will be a useful resource as the College develops and implements a new Climate Action Plan (CAP). The CAP will continue outreach, awareness, and education efforts across the College in the hopes of achieving ambitious and necessary net-zero targets.

The Journey to Net-Zero at Mohawk College

Mohawk has come a long way in its decarbonization journey. Since 2007, the College has reduced greenhouse gas emissions in our buildings by over 65 percent! However, the journey to reaching a net-zero campus is still far from over.

From informed planning to implementing cutting-edge technologies, it is important that decision-makers, staff, and students are well-equipped with the knowledge needed to imagine alternative solutions for a net-zero future.

This 3-minute video provides an “insider-view” on what net-zero means for Mohawk College and the important role we all play in achieving it.
