Delivery Modalities

Introduction

Offering programming in different delivery modalities, including hybrid, hyflex, and online formats, is critical to the future of higher education for several compelling reasons. Firstly, these diverse modalities cater to the evolving needs and preferences of a diverse student body, accommodating those who require flexibility due to work, family, or other commitments. Secondly, providing multiple delivery options allows institutions to reach a broader audience beyond their geographical boundaries, fostering inclusivity and diversity in the learning community. Moreover, incorporating technology and online components enhances students' digital literacy and prepares them for the evolving job market, where virtual collaboration and remote work are becoming increasingly prevalent. Embracing various delivery modalities also enables institutions to optimize their resources and infrastructure, ensuring efficiency and scalability. As higher education continues to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of global challenges and technological advancements, the integration of hybrid, hyflex, and online programming remains instrumental in enriching the educational experience, expanding accessibility, and securing a sustainable future for higher learning institutions.

Topics of Discussion

Delivery Modes that require Campus Classroom

Face-to-Face Delivery

In face-to-face delivery, all teaching contact hours take place in a setting where the educator is physically together with the learners. The place may be a lecture hall, a lab, or other physical space.

MyCanvas guides learners through course progression and provides additional opportunities to interact with course content, the instructor, peers, submit assignments, receive feedback, and view grades

Classrooms used in HyFlex deliveries are typically equipped with various cameras, microphones, and screens, to allow the remote learners to engage with the in-class participants.

Note: Some HyFlex deliveries are restricted to 2 modalities- in-class and asynchronous. Other models include a third modality- remote synchronous.

Hybrid Learning

Hybrid delivery includes a combination of on campus face-to-face and online delivery. Online components may include elements of synchronous and/or asynchronous learning.

MyCanvas guides learners through course progression and provides opportunities to interact with course content, the instructor, peers, submit assignments, receive feedback, and view grades.

Most courses at Mohawk College would be described as having a hybrid learning delivery.

Hy-Flex Delivery

Hy-Flex delivery is a multi-modal experience that includes options of face-to-face, online synchronous, and online asynchronous learning modes. In HyFlex, the teacher typically teaches from a campus classroom, and learners have the option of choosing to attend face-to-face, synchronously online, or asynchronously online.

MyCanvas guides learners through course progression and provides opportunities to interact with course content, the instructor, peers, submit assignments, receive feedback, and view grades.

Classrooms used in HyFlex deliveries are typically equipped with various cameras, microphones, and screens, to allow the remote learners to engage with the in-class participants.

Note: The key differentiator between Hybrid and HyFlex is student choice, wherein students have the flexibility to choose how they engage with the course week to week.

Delivery Modes that Do Not require Campus Classroom

Online Synchronous

Online Synchronous courses are delivered primarily using a web-conferencing platform like Zoom or Microsoft Teams. MyCanvas guides learners through course progression and provides additional opportunities to interact with course content, the instructor, peers, submit assignments, receive feedback, and view grades.

Remote synchronous delivery is characterized by direct real-time interaction between the educator and learners. Opportunities for learners to connect with each other should also be present. Learning and contact is primarily synchronous and may include some asynchronous activity.

Online Asynchronous

Online Asynchronous courses are delivered through MyCanvas and are self-directed in nature. MyCanvas guides learners through course progression and provides opportunities to interact with course content, submit assignments, receive feedback, and view grades asynchronously.

In remote asynchronous delivery learners progress at their own pace, providing they meet course milestones and due dates. Asynchronous courses may or may not be facilitated by a teacher and opportunities to connect with peers may also be present.

Other Definitions

Remote Learning Delivery

Remote learning is a form of education that is delivered over the internet as a means of addressing interruptions in face-to-face learning. Technology mediated learning environments are leveraged to mimic learning activities and assessments designed for face-to-face with changes and iterations applied incrementally.

Blended Learning Delivery

Mohawk College will be retiring the term Blended Learning as the definitions above more accurately describe the delivery modes now available at Mohawk College.
