MAP Frequently Asked Questions

What is MAP?
MAP is a web-based academic advising tool. It displays a student's entire academic record including completed, in-progress, and remaining course work. The primary purpose of MAP is to be a self-advisement tool for students but it is not a substitution for consultation with a Student Success Advisor or your Academic Coordinator.

How can I access MAP?
MAP can be found in the My Student Account tab under the My Grades channel in MyMohawk. There are no additional usernames or passwords required. MAP is web-based and it can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection.

Who can use MAP?
MAP is available to all students in post-secondary programs.

Why should I use MAP?
MAP can do the following:

  • Display which courses you still need to take to complete your program
  • Display your overall GPA for your program to date*
  • Display your grades for completed courses
  • Display your exemptions
  • Display your equivalent courses
  • Compare your academic record to another Program of Studies if you are considering changing programs**

Note: The overall GPA in MAP is not the same as a semester GPA - the GPA in MAP accounts for every course which has a numeric grade and that you have completed and passed to date in your current Program of Studies. Please consult your Student Success Advisor or read the Program Promotion Policy (opens PDF, 56kb) and Graduation Requirements for more details regarding the Semester GPA.

Note: Consult your Student Success Advisor if you are considering changing your program.

Why is my MAP GPA different than my term GPA?
Your MAP GPA accounts for all courses in your Program of Studies which have been passed and assigned a numeric grade. The MAP GPA accounts for courses which fulfill the following three criteria: have a passing grade; have a numeric grade; are a part of your Program of Studies. The MAP GPA does not separate courses based on term or semester.

Your Term GPA accounts for all courses that are assigned a numeric grade which you attempted during the term, whether you passed them or not. Courses that are part of your Program of Studies in which you do not achieve a passing grade will count towards your term GPA for the term in which they are taken. Please consult your Student Success Advisor or read the Program Promotion and Graduation Requirements (opens PDF, 56kb) Policy for more details.

What does 'Other Course Activity' mean?

'Other Course Activity' refers to courses you have completed and passed that do not apply to your current Program of Studies. General Education course selections will also show in this area while they are in progress. Once the General Education course is complete and passed, it will move to the main area of the Audit if General Education is a requirement in your Program of Studies.

What does 'Insufficient - Not Counted' mean?
The 'Insufficient - Not Counted Courses' are courses you have completed but did not achieve a passing grade. They are not counted towards your GPA in MAP.

How does MAP handle withdrawn courses?
All courses you withdraw from will display in MAP under the 'Insufficient - Withdrawn' area. Courses in this area will not count towards your GPA.

How does MAP handle repeated courses?
MAP will always display completed courses that did not achieve a passing grade in the 'Insufficient - Not Counted' area of the audit. This area can be found below the main body of the audit.

If you are currently registered in a course that is part of your Program of Studies and which you previously completed but did not earn a passing grade, you will see 'IP' which stands for 'In Progress' beside the course in the main area of the audit. Once the course is repeated and passed it will be marked as complete on the audit.

Will MAP show the courses I've completed at another post-secondary institution?
No. If you have completed courses at another post-secondary institution, you may be eligible for exemption from courses in your program at Mohawk. If your exemptions are approved they will be displayed in your MAP audit. Information about exemption requests.

When will an update (grades, grade changes, exemption, etc.) display in MAP?

Updates will display up to 48 hours of the change/update being made. Information about exemption requests.

How does MAP determine which Program of Studies to use?

MAP will use the Program of Studies you are following or it will determine the 'best fit' Program of Studies based on changes in your academic progression. For any questions or clarification, please consult your Student Success Advisor.

How is MAP different from a transcript?
MAP is an unofficial record of your academic history. A transcript is an official and complete document that shows your academic history. To request an official transcript, log into MyMohawk and complete the online Transcript Request form under the My Student Account tab.

Who can see a MAP account?
Students can only see their own MAP information. Staff members have access to student information in MAP when necessary for academic advising purposes. All student information is kept confidential.
