Grade 11 school visits to Mohawk College

Many jobs and careers especially in science, technology and engineering rely heavily on mathematical concepts and computational thinking. The Department of Mathematics in collaboration with the Computer Science and Information Technology Department at Mohawk College is pleased to offer several day trip sessions for students in grade 11 college stream math courses and encourage students to consider a STEM program as one of their post-secondary options.

Our Goal:

To demonstrate the significance of mathematics and computing in different fields as well as in everyday life and by exposing students to the ways how different occupations devour mathematics we will excite students more about learning this subject.

There are several dates available to book your school trip:

2:00 to 2:15 PM Closing Remarks

Math sessions:

Problem-solving session: students in small groups will be working on application questions that reflect the use of mathematics in different fields: engineering, business, social sciences, everyday life.

Other fun activities (cryptography, solving Rubik`s Cube) may be included if time permits or by request.

Computer Science sessions:

Computer science workshops will revolve around building fun video games using the same programming languages that industry software developers use.  Students will get a sample of the algorithmic thinking that programming involves, and the tool used to teach them (Khan Academy) is freely available online, allowing students to follow-up and keep learning more after the workshop.
