SIGMA 2026

SIGMA at Mohawk College

SIGMA at Mohawk College is a provincial competition for high school students keen on exploring practical applications of mathematics and statistics across various interdisciplinary fields such as business, engineering, aviation, health sciences, arts and many more.

SIGMA is organized by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and it has two formats: 

  • In-person event: Tuesday, May 12th, 2026, at Mohawk College, Fennell Campus (students compete in teams of two and individually); and
  • Online event: Wednesday, May 20th, 2026, online, in your classroom (students compete individually only). Please visit SIGMA Online for more information on this format.

Registration is open as of April 1st

SIGMA (In-Person)

  • When: Tuesday, May 12th, 2026
  • Where: Mohawk College | Fennell Campus | 135 Fennell Avenue West | Hamilton
  • Who: Grades 10, 11 and 12 High School Students (teams of two students and individually)
  • Registration deadline: Friday, May 8th, 2026, 11:59 pm
  • Cost: Free. Parking rates apply.

These resources illustrate the range of difficulty and the types of real world contexts students will encounter during the competition.

Competition Rules

SIGMA is open to high school students in grades 10, 11 and 12 who are enrolled in, or who have completed, an Applied or College level mathematics course in the current school year. Eligible courses include:

  • Grade 10: MFM2P;
  • Grade 11: MBF3C and MCF3M; and
  • Grade 12: MCT4C and MAP4C 

 

SIGMA (In-Person) participants will compete, in-person at Mohawk College, as a team of two (Part A) and individually (Part B). Part A is working as a team of two on long answers application problems, and Part B is working individually on short answer mathematics and statistics questions. There is a limit of one team per course per school.

Participation is free.
