SIGMA Online

SIGMA Online at Mohawk College

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Mohawk College invites high school students to participate in SIGMA Online, a province wide competition designed to engage learners in practical and interdisciplinary applications of mathematics and statistics. This event offers an accessible, co curricular opportunity for teachers and students who wish to extend classroom learning and explore how quantitative reasoning supports fields such as business and technology.

SIGMA Online takes place once per year in May. Teachers register first to create a school group, after which students may register individually. Registration is required and students cannot register on their own. Once a teacher’s registration is approved, instructions and a school access code will be provided.

NOTE: If you are interested in registering for SIGMA (in person) competition joining us at Mohawk College, Fennel campus on May 12th please visit SIGMA.

Questions range from introductory to more challenging, encouraging students to apply concepts, interpret quantitative information, and connect mathematics to real world contexts.

Participants will encounter a variety of problem types, including applied multi step scenarios, data interpretation, numerical reasoning, and foundational statistical thinking. The competition is delivered online through Möbius (DigitalEd), a secure platform supported by Mohawk College.

Sample questions and preparation resources are available below to help students understand the style and scope of the competition.

Competition Rules

SIGMA Online is open to high school students in Grades 10 through 12 who are enrolled in or who have completed an Applied or College level mathematics course in the current school year. Eligible courses include:
