SIGMA 2026

SIGMA at Mohawk College

SIGMA at Mohawk College is a provincial competition for high school students keen on exploring practical applications of mathematics and statistics across various interdisciplinary fields such as business, engineering, aviation, health sciences, arts and many more.

SIGMA is organized by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and it has two formats: 

  • In-person event: Tuesday, May 12th, 2026, at Mohawk College, Fennell Campus (students compete in teams of two and individually); and
  • Online event: Wednesday, May 20th, 2026, online, in your classroom (students compete individually only). Please visit SIGMA Online for more information on this format.

Registration is open as of April 1st

SIGMA (In-Person)

  • When: Tuesday, May 12th, 2026
  • Where: Mohawk College | Fennell Campus | 135 Fennell Avenue West | Hamilton
  • Who: Grades 10, 11 and 12 High School Students (teams of two students and individually)
  • Registration deadline: Friday, May 8th, 2026, 11:59 pm
  • Cost: Free. Parking rates apply.

These resources illustrate the range of difficulty and the types of real world contexts students will encounter during the competition.

Competition Rules

SIGMA is open to high school students in grades 10, 11 and 12 who are enrolled in, or who have completed, an Applied or College level mathematics course in the current school year. Eligible courses include:

  • Grade 10: MFM2P;
  • Grade 11: MBF3C and MCF3M; and
  • Grade 12: MCT4C and MAP4C 

 

SIGMA (In-Person) participants will compete, in-person at Mohawk College, as a team of two (Part A) and individually (Part B). Part A is working as a team of two on long answers application problems, and Part B is working individually on short answer mathematics and statistics questions. There is a limit of one team per course per school.

Participation is free.

Prizes and Awards

Prizes include gift cards of $150, $120 and $100 for the best three teams in each course.

  • 1st place team receives a gift card of $150 each;
  • 2nd place team receives a gift card of $120 each;
  • 3rd place team receives a gift card of $100 each;
  • Competitor in each course with the Best Individual Score will receive a Bluetooth speaker.

 

Entrance Award at Mohawk College

$500 Mohawk College entrance award for the two top-scoring individual grade 12 students from SIGMA In-Person!*

*One (1) $500 Mohawk College entrance award to be awarded to each of the two top-scoring individual grade 12 students from the in-person format of the 2026 SIGMA Mathematics and Statistics competition at Mohawk College. The online format (2026 SIGMA Online) is not eligible. $500 entrance award is permitted towards eligible tuition and compulsory fees at Mohawk College Campuses (link: Mohawk College Campuses) or Continuing Education (CE). Eligible tuition and compulsory fees include those for full- or part-time programs through post-secondary (daytime) or CE. Program start dates are inclusive of the Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 terms. $500 entrance award must be used towards payment of eligible tuition fees and compulsory fees by March 31, 2027. Student must be an Ontario Resident for 12 consecutive months prior to start, Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or Protected Person. The student must not be receiving assistance through the Better Jobs Ontario program and/or non-Indigenous sponsorship. A student applying to Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is eligible. If the student withdraws for a refund or without academic penalty from their studies in the term they are provided scholarship funds,  the entrance award will be removed and the student may be required to repay these funds. Other terms and conditions may apply.  Two (2) $500 entrance awards are available, one for each of the two top-scoring individual grade 12 students from the in-person format of the 2026 SIGMA Mathematics and Statistics competition at Mohawk College.
