Security Alert Messenger (SAM) Service

Mohawk’s Security Alert Messenger (SAM) service is part of Mohawk College’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for students and staff and employees of companies who operate businesses on campus.

MohawkSAM’s primary role is to warn you when there is a direct threat to your safety on the Fennell or Stoney Creek campuses, such as a lockdown, campus evacuation or closure due to inclement weather. Once activated by Mohawk College Security, MohawkSAM will send you a brief notification alerting you to the type of situation taking place and advising you on what actions you should take next. The service will also be used to inform you when campuses are closed due to severe weather. Please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions below for specific details on when the service will be used.

If you choose, MohawkSAM can send alert notifications right to your mobile device so you can receive messages on the go, no matter where you are. All you need to do is provide your mobile number and authorize MohawkSAM to send you SMS messages. Please note that while MohawkSAM is free, any phone calls, messages or text messages received or sent by your device are subject to standard usage rates. Please check with your service provider if you unsure about what your plan covers.

To sign up for text messages from MohawkSAM look for the MohawkSAM link in the Welcome tab on MyMohawk.

MohawkSAM also sends alerts to your Mohawk email addresses, posts alerts to the College’s Facebook, Twitter and website.  If you register, it will even text your mobile number.

Subscribe now to get important notifications right on your mobile phone

MohawkSAM’s text messaging feature (SMS) will send important notifications right to your mobile phone, no matter where you are, so you don’t have to go looking for it. All you need to do to subscribe is provide your mobile number and authorize MohawkSAM to send you text messages.

How to Opt In - Staff and Students

Welcome to MohawkSAM. For your convenience the College has already included you into the MohawkSAM Database. During major situations, you will receive important messages on your MyMohawk email addresses.

For your further convenience, MohawkSAM has the ability to send messages directly to your mobile device in the form of a text message and/or phone call. Subscribe to this service using the instructions below.

Subscribing to the Text Message feature of MohawkSAM:

  1. Log into your MyMohawk account.
  2. On the Welcome tab click on "Set Up/Manage My MohawkSAM Account."
  3. In the popup window either select a cell phone number on file, or add a new cell phone number.
  4. Click on the "Save & Opt-in" button.
  5. A pop up will appear, please read the message and click "Continue and Opt-in".
  6. You may also update your personal email address on file in the space provided. Click on the "Update Email" button to save your updated email.

Important Information About Your MohawkSAM Subscription

MohawkSAM provides urgent alert notifications free of charge. However, any phone calls received by your mobile device, as well as any SMS/text messages received or sent by your device, are subject to standard usage rates. Data charges may also be applicable, if you access the system via mobile browser or use data to retrieve email messages. If applicable, these charges would be levied by your mobile telecommunications provider. Please check with your mobile telecommunications provider to determine if you will incur any expense for using, or receiving notifications from MohawkSAM.

 

How to Opt-in - Third Party

MohawkSAM is a service for all Mohawk students, staff and third parties - people who work on campus but are not employees of the College (eg. MSA staff, CLC, CINDE, MCE, Chartwells, etc.)

How to update your personal information

SAM is a free service for all Mohawk students, staff and third party staff, but the service is only as good as the information you provide. Please make sure you update your contact information whenever you change addresses or phone numbers.

Note: The service needs your permission to send messages to your mobile device.

How to Update your Profile - Staff and Students

If your mobile device number or personal email changes during your time as a student, please follow the process below to ensure you are kept up to date:

  1. Login into your MyMohawk account
  2. On the Welcome tab click on "Set Up/Manage My SAM Account."
  3. In the popup window either select a cell phone number on file, or add a new cell phone number.
  4. Click on the "Save & Opt-in" button.
  5. A pop up will appear, please read the message and click "Continue and Opt-in".

If you change your cell phone number in Banner Self-serve, you MUST Opt-in to SAM again in order to continue receiving notifications.
