Film Review by Catherine Udogie

Newcomer Voices

Coming to Canada was an exciting experience for me because I was coming to join my children. But the most exciting and fulfilling aspect of this relocation has been connecting back to the world of reading.

My first library experience wowed me. It was in Ottawa. I got in and I could not believe all the resources I saw--loads of educational and fiction materials. I thought it was the best I could get until I came into Hamilton and got even more surprised. Hamilton libraries in addition to free trainings on computers and entrepreneurship also have free film shows for adults, children and families.

Since I got to Hamilton, I have watched so many movies. I make it a habit to watch one film every week at the library. The library shows movies for free every week, at different branches. You can see what’s being offered at http://hpl.ca/free-movie-programs .

Below are a few films that I’ve watched.

No Country for Old Men (2007)

Kong: Skull Island (2017)

The Shallows (2016)

Jackie (2016)

The United Kingdom (2016)

Sully (2017)

The Beautiful Mind (2001)

Fences (2016)

Let Me In (2010)

Queen of Katwe (2016)

Get Out (2017)

Hawksaw Ridge (2016)

Doctor Strange (2016)

10 Days in a mad house (2016)

Review of the film ‘Sully’

On Jan. 15, 2009, Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) had to make an emergency landing in New York's Hudson River after US Airways Flight 1549 was struck by a flock of geese. Miraculously, all of the 155 passengers and crew survived the harrowing ordeal, and Sullenberger became a national hero in the eyes of the public and the media. But, despite being seen as a hero, the famed pilot had to face an investigation that threatened to destroy his career and reputation.

The film highlights the need for a quick decision to land on water by a very experienced pilot. However, during the investigation, computer simulations showed the possibility of emergency landing at 2 nearby airports, and blamed the pilots for not trying to get to the airport. The pilot pointed out that computers can analyze instantly but humans take time to think. And when that time was taken into account, the possibility of safe landing at an airport could not be achieved.

This is a must watch!

Review of the film ‘Hacksaw Ridge’

This is the true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield), who won the Congressional Medal of Honor despite refusing to bear arms during WWII on religious grounds. After Doss was drafted into the army, the other soldiers didn’t like or respect him because he refused to fight. However, he earned respect for his bravery, selflessness and compassion when he risked his life, without firing a shot, to save 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa.

The film highlights commitment and dedication to duty and taking risks to ensure he got his job done despite being in a life-threatening terrain.

Also a must watch!
