Every achievement counts! Help students turn their involvement into recognition!

At Mohawk College, the Co-Curricular Record (CCR) is an official document that recognizes and verifies a student’s involvement outside the classroom. Each approved activity has a designated staff or faculty validator who reviews and confirms student participation. Validators are responsible for approving or declining CCR requests for the activities they manage. In many cases, you are also advocates of the CCR, helping students understand its value and encouraging them to get recognized for their efforts.

If you are looking for more information and ideas on CCR options contact andrea.brienesse [at] mohawkcollege.ca (Andrea Brienesse) for more information.

Exploring CCR Activities

The CCR helps students grow personally and professionally by building transferable and employability skills through meaningful involvement.

There are a variety of co-curricular experiences both on and off campus that students can get involved in and get CCR recognition for, whether it be of personal interest or professional development. Check out the Co-Curricular Catalogue to view current positions (positions are added throughout the year). Keep in mind some key factors to ensure your involvement is CCR eligible:

Competencies & Learning Outcomes

Each position on the Co-Curricular Record includes a set of competency statements derived from Mohawk’s five Institutional Learning Outcomes. These statements reflect what a student has learned through their involvement, highlighting the skills and experiences gained from the activity and showing how it supports their personal, academic, and career development.

Mohawk's Institutional Learning Outcomes include:

Communication:

The activity helps develop the ability to communicate effectively with others of diverse background, values and personalities to develop meaningful relationships, share knowledge, manage conflict, solve problems, and foster positive change.

Collaboration:

Your role offers the opportunity to collaborate openly and productively across networks to enhance knowledge, generate innovative ideas, resolve challenges and respond to change.

Critical Thinking & Creative Problem Solving:

The volunteer position recognizes that creativity, problem solving and critical thinking skills can be of benefit to assess risk, make informed decisions and take appropriate timely action.

Continuous Learning:

The volunteer opportunity offers the chance to develop practical knowledge, career- or life-oriented skills; transferable skills and abilities; capacity to use learning technologies to stay current, pursue professional development, and personal renewal opportunities.

Personal, Educational & Career Development:

Technical Competence
Adaptability & Flexibility
Planning & Organization

Responsible Citizen:

The activity helps you develop a sense of your role as a citizen; to apply personal, professional and social practices promoting physical, economic and emotional well-being; and also to foster civic engagement.

Benefits for students building a CCR:

Jobs and Careers
Highlight Career-Ready Skills

The Co-Curricular Record (CCR) captures key employability skills such as leadership, teamwork, and communication that employers actively seek. Encourage students to use their CCR to demonstrate these strengths.

Enhance Resumes and Cover Letters

The CCR provides verified, experience-based content that students can confidently include in their job applications. It adds substance and credibility to their resumes and cover letters.

Validate Student Involvement

Activities listed on the CCR are institutionally approved by Mohawk College, giving students and employers confidence in the legitimacy of their involvement.

Support Job Interview Preparation

CCR competency statements help students articulate their experiences clearly during interviews, giving them language to describe the skills they've developed through co-curricular involvement.

Personal Growth and Recognition
Promote Learning Outside the Classroom

The CCR recognizes meaningful learning from co-curricular activities such as volunteering, student leadership, and club involvement, helping students develop as well-rounded individuals.

Encourage Self-Awareness and Strengths Discovery

By reflecting on their CCR, students gain insight into their interests, strengths, and areas for growth, valuable for both personal and professional development.

Strengthen Award and Scholarship Applications

Encouraging students to track their involvement through the CCR can enhance their eligibility and competitiveness for scholarships, awards, and bursaries.

Support Post-Graduate Applications

The CCR demonstrates that a student’s learning extends beyond academics, helping them stand out in applications for graduate or professional programs.

CCR Procedures

Your involvement will be both helpful and appreciated!

With all the programs (and all the students) we serve, we count on a network of Faculty and Staff to act as CCR validators. Please consider adding your activity to the CCR Directory and taking on the role of a validator, especially if you are introducing CCR activities through your program or your community connections.

Questions? Contact Andrea Brienesse for more information.

  1. A Position Request Form must be submitted to add a new position to the CCR directory.
  2. A Student Life staff member reviews and approves the request, then adds the position to the database and notifies the submitter by email.
  3. Students can:

    • Search and add the position on their CCR once they complete the activity.

    Alternatively, staff can:

    • Send a list of student names and Mohawk IDs to student.life [at] mohawkcollege.ca (student[dot]life[at]mohawkcollege[dot]ca), and Student Life will take care of the rest.
  4. An automatic email notifies the validator of a pending validation.
  5. Once verified by the validator, the position is officially recorded on the student’s CCR.

Request a CCR Position for your activity

To request that your activity be added to the CCR directory, first ensure that it meets the CCR criteria (explained above “Eligible CCR Activities”) and complete a CCR Position Request Form.

A CCR Activity Approval Process Checklist

  • Written in the neutral narrative past tense, e.g. "this student acted as..."
  • 1 small paragraph or less to describe the role (No recruitment pitches please)
  • No bullets/numbered lists
  • No need to state what the student will be rewarded with at the end of the activity (they will have a Co-Curricular Record!)
  • Select 5-10 learning outcomes. Please only select the most relevant – do not select more than 10 (and in most cases only a handful should apply)

Troubleshooting

I accidentally declined a student's position, what do I do?

Not to worry, we can help! Email %20student.life [at] mohawkcollege.ca (student[dot]life[at]mohawkcollege[dot]ca).

Can I make changes or delete the position that I am assigned validator for?

Yes. Email student.life [at] mohawkcollege.ca and we’d be happy to help.

Can I be removed as a validator but assign another staff member?

Yes. Email student.life [at] mohawkcollege.ca and we can take care of this.

A student has not entered hours or selected competency statements for the position, should I still approve it?

If you can confirm that the student was involved in the experience, you can complete the missing information on their behalf. If you are not sure, you can email the student to ask them to complete the missing information or to provide the details. Only approve a position if you can confirm the student's involvement and that they have met the position criteria.
