Career Pathways Field Placement

Field Placement Information 

Students in the Career Pathways Program at Mohawk College have the opportunity to complete a 70-hour unpaid placement in second semester. The field placement gives them the opportunity to put into practice employability skills and skills focused on throughout the program, including; problem solving, professionalism, communication skills, and team building. Placement helps prepare students for future employment and other educational opportunities.

The Primary Focus of Placement is: 

  • To give students the opportunity to practice and build on professional employability skills 
  • To gain practical workplace experience
  • To enhance student professional experience
  • To support their position for future opportunities
  • To gain exposure to real life experiences and situations within the workplace
  • To provide students with an opportunity to evaluate their vocational choice
  • To bring the student into contact with professionals and to facilitate their professional growth
  • To identify strength and goal areas

Field Placement Class/Seminar

The Career Pathways program offers a seminar class whereby professional and personal skills are practiced and reinforced for students to have a successful placement experience. The Career Planning class addresses topics such as communication, feedback, professionalism, disclosure, and confidentiality. Students are expected to complete required pre-placement training and in class activities.

Field Placement Hours 

Students are required to complete 70 hours total by the end of semester 2. Hours can range from 5-10 per week and can take part during any day of the week outside of class time. Fridays are completely blocked off for placement. Missed placement days need to be reported to both placement supervisor and Job Developer. Any placement hours missed must be made up as arranged by the Job Developer.

Contact Us 

The Career Pathways Job Developer coordinates placement for students and is the first point of contact for both students and community partners. The Job Developer helps prepare students for placemat start up and supports them throughout the placement process by answering questions, providing feedback, support during placement transitions, and selecting a placement. The Program Coordinator provides additional support as needed.
