Job Descriptions

Job Summary

Course Peer Tutor: The primary objective of the Peer Tutor is to facilitate the learning process of others by building and refining a student’s knowledge through question and conversation. Peer Tutors may be asked to participate in one or all of the following types of tutoring: one-to-one, drop-in, multi-student tutor sessions, or open lab monitoring.

Math Tutor: Math Tutors provide activities to develop math skills, including peer tutoring for math courses, clarifying course content, clarifying assignment questions, navigating MyCanvas and other helpful resources, test and exam preparation, providing study tips and strategies, and helping students set up their calculators.

Writing & Communication Tutor: The Writing Tutors provide activities to develop communication skills, including peer tutoring for communication courses, writing consultations, grammar and reading support, self-directed workshops and ESL Conversation Clubs.
 

Responsibilities

The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Facilitate learning of course content material in courses they have previously taken through one-to-one, drop-in, multi-student, or open lab monitoring tutoring sessions

  • Honour all scheduled appointments and complete exit reports in WC Online following all scheduled appointments.

  • Work closely with the LSC staff as well as other LSC student staff to maintain and keep up to date information available to students and staff regarding services offered in the LSC.
     

Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in a Mohawk College program
  • A Minimum Grade Point Average of 80% prior to and during the contract term
  • Be willing to facilitate virtual tutoring through approved platforms as needed.

Academics and Commitment

Peer Tutors will make available a minimum of 5 hours a week for Peer Tutor activities up to a maximum of 15 hours per week (actual number may vary, subject to demand).

All Peer Tutors are students first and are therefore expected to model positive academic habits. Peer Tutors are expected to give the responsibilities of the position priority over all other activities except those which pertain to their academic success.

Job Summary

The PASS (Peer-Assisted Study Session) program is certified by the Canadian National Centre for Supplemental Instruction and is designed to improve student success in historically difficult courses by guiding students through a process of reviewing, applying, practicing, and studying course materials via regularly scheduled group sessions. 

PASS Leaders attend all classes of their designated course section, and later facilitate collaborative learning sessions.
 

Responsibilities

The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Attend all classes of their designated course section
  • Facilitate weekly collaborative learning sessions (PASS sessions)
  • Review course materials and prepare session plans
  • Promote the PASS Program by creating marketing materials, delivering presentations about the program, and staffing information booths.

* Attendance at class sections and facilitation of sessions is typically on-campus, but leaders may be asked to complete these duties through approved platforms as needed.
 

Qualifications

  • Must be a full-time student at Mohawk College, in their second semester or higher
  • A Minimum Grade Point Average of 80% prior to and during the contract term
  • Completion of the designated PASS-supported course with a final grade of 85% or higher (or equivalent)
  • Previous experience leading and facilitating groups would be considered an asset
  • A passion for leadership, excellent communication skills, positive attitude and outgoing personality, team player, and creative problem solver

 

Academics and Commitment

The PASS Leader is expected to act as a model student, demonstrating successful organizational and learning strategies as well as other “good student” behaviours. PASS Leaders are expected to give the responsibilities of the position priority over all other activities except those which pertain to their academic success. PASS Leaders will make available an average of 10-15 hours a week for PASS activities.

Job Summary

The LSC Ambassador supports the development and delivery of initiatives to promote the services of the Learning Support Centre through College events, information tables, internal LSC tutoring events, and social media campaigns. 
 

Responsibilities

The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • To support peers with creating accounts and making appointments for tutoring at peak service delivery times.
  • Answer questions about services available and assist students in accessing those services
  • Work closely with staff and fellow student leaders on special projects and at events, including but not limited to Study Jam, Tutor PD Sessions, and Tutor Socials.
  • Assist with promotion of student success initiatives 
     

Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in a Mohawk College program
  • A Minimum Grade Point Average of 80% prior to and during the contract term
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and presentation skills
  • Strong time management and organization skills
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, MyCanvas, Zoom)
  • Proficiency in social media and graphic design (Facebook, Instagram, Canva)

 

Academics and Commitment

  • The LSC Ambassador is a student first and is therefore expected to model positive academic habits.
  • The LSC Ambassador is expected to give the responsibilities of the position priority over all other college activities except those which pertain to his/her academic success. 

 

Hours: 5 to 15 hours per week  
Rate of Pay: $16.55 per hour (plus 4% in lieu of vacation)  
Contract Period:  Contracts are for a semester in length.
