The behavioural clinic at Mohawk College trains postgraduate students to support individuals with behavioural challenges, developmental disabilities and other exceptionalities using applied behaviour analysis. The aim of this clinic is to increase client independence and reduce avoidance or challenging behaviour associated with community activities or professionals. Therapists in this clinic work cooperatively with other college programs to offer interdisciplinary service provision. Students in this clinic are supervised by Board Certified Behaviour Analysts®.

The following list of services is not exhaustive. All treatment interventions are customized to fit the needs of our clients. Please contact the clinic with any behavioural needs or goals. The Clinical Supervisor will help to determine if your needs can be met by the clinic.

Online Workshops

Join us in our online workshops, offered by students in Autism and Behvioural Science program and supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. If you are interested, please register below. 

 

Introduction to Behaviour Analysis – What parents should know

In this 1-hour workshop, parents will get a broad overview of services offered in the community, what they should look for in reputable ABA treatments, and an introduction to behavioural principles that can be used at home. Ample time will be available for questions and answers.

Increasing Life Skills Independence for your Child

In this 1-hour workshop, parents will be provided with strategies for increasing their child’s independence in life skills such as brushing their teeth, showering, making a snack, or completing chores. This is a great time to work on this type of independence! Plenty of examples will be provided.

Reinforcement 101

This 1-hour workshop will provide parents with simple reinforcement-based strategies to promote their child’s best behaviour and prevent problem behaviour on a daily basis.

1:1 Services

Cost: $25.00 per session

Increasing Tolerance and Independence in Aesthetic and Self Care Routines

This intervention package will focus on increasing the participant’s ability to complete aesthetic and self-care routines. This will lead to enhanced independence and community participation. The instructor will focus on skills that are important to the participant. Parent training will be offered throughout this intervention.

Potential Skills:

  • Nail care
  • Face Washing
  • Dressing/wearing clothing
  • Hair brushing

Abduction Prevention Training

This series of sessions focuses on teaching skills to prevent abduction. It involves hands-on practice and feedback until the client can successfully behave in ways consistent with preventing abduction (recognizing stranger danger, withholding information, telling trusted adults, walking away) in practice scenarios. Parent training will be offered throughout this intervention.

What to do when Lost

This series of sessions teach participants a series of steps to follow if they are ever lost without a trusted adult. Parent training will be offered throughout this intervention.

Increasing Physical Fitness

This intervention will focus on increasing client motivation to engage in physical fitness and create a rewarding fitness routine. Participants will work with instructors from both the Autism and Behaviour Science and Health and Wellness programs. This package includes use of the gym at Mohawk College and access to a personal trainer and parent training.

Decreasing Difficulties with Transitions

This intervention package will focus on increasing the ease at which an individual transitions between activities (e.g., high preferred to low preferred). Parent and caregiver training is an important aspect of this intervention. 

Skills Assessments

Skills assessments are conducted to determine any skill deficits and identify suggestions for current and future learning targets. Following the assessment, a therapist will review the results and discuss potential services or strategies going forward. The client can keep the scored assessment for their records and results can be shared with all relevant parties (e.g., school). The following assessments can be completed at the Behavioural Clinic:

Cost: $40.00 + Cost of the Assessment

  • Verbal Behaviour Milestones Assessment and Placement Protocol (VB-MAPP)
  • Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS)
  • Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (ABLS)

Workshops for Caregivers

A variety of workshops will be offered to parents or caregivers. Details on these workshops will be located and updated on the Clinic website. These will be created using feedback and input from previous and current clients.

Cost: $20.00 per family (all family members are welcome!)

Group Programs

Cost: $15.00 per session

Lego ® Social Skills Group (Ages 7-8, 9-12, Teens) 

This group targets social skills unique to each child/teen. Children or teens work collaboratively in teams of 2-3 people to build structures using Lego pieces. Skills may include but are not limited to eye contact, requesting, turn-taking, sharing, following instructions, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.  

Language for Learning

This group will use direct instruction and follow the Language for Learning curriculum. Tailored to begin at your child’s current skill level, this program teaches concepts to help them understand oral and written language.
