Job Search Strategies

You don’t need to know everything—you just need the right strategy. Wherever you’re starting from, we’ll help you turn your schooling, skills, and experiences into a job search plan that works for you.

1. Get focused before applying – Don’t apply to everything!

Start by clearly defining where you want to apply and the types of roles you are interested in.

  • Identify 2–3 target job titles
  • Identify 2–3 target industries
  • Decide location preferences (remote, local, hybrid)
  • List 5–7 key skills to highlight
  • Write a short one-sentence career goal

2. Get your resume and cover letter ready to go!

Not sure where to start? Explore our resume and cover letter resources on CareerConnect. Below are a few key things to consider.

  • Resume is 1 –2 pages
  • Education, Experiential Learning (Co-ops, Field Placements, Clinical Placements, etc.), projects, and part-time work included
  • Bullets show skills and outcomes
  • Resume tailored to each role
  • Cover letter customized per job
  • Proofread by another person

Create tailored resumes for each position using the InStage Resume Assist feature:

3. LinkedIn and your online presence

Your online presence tells a story—make sure it’s a strong one. Review your digital footprint and use LinkedIn strategically. The following tips can help:

  • Use a professional LinkedIn photo
  • Write a headline that highlights your role and key skills
  • Use the About section to explain your interests and goals
  • Add projects to the Experience section
  • Turn on the Open to Work feature

4. Job search strategies

Start by using specific job titles, industries, and locations in your search. Consider the following strategies:

  • Saved searches on job boards
  • Applying to recent postings (7–10 days)
  • Using company career pages
  • Stay organized and track your applications

5. Network often… without the cringe.

Networking can feel intimidating, especially when you are just getting started. Talking to new people may be uncomfortable, but personal connections remain one of the fastest ways to find a job. With the right approach, networking can feel more natural and help you build relationships that move your career forward.

Follow the steps below to get started:

  • Identify alumni and entry-level contacts
  • Send 5–10 LinkedIn messages
  • Complete 1–3 networking conversations
  • Send follow-up thank-you messages
  • Connect with professional associations in your industry – some will have student or recent graduate discount rates (not all).

Sample outreach message:

“Hello _________, I’m a recent grad from _(Program)_ at Mohawk College. I’m exploring entry‑level roles in ___________ and would love to ask about your career path and any advice you’d share.”

HINT: Use the Mohawk College LinkedIn page as a great resource for networking with Alumni.

6. Prepare for interviews

Your hard work with job searching, refining your resume, and networking has paid off. Now it is time to keep the momentum going and prepare for your interview.

Use the checklist below to make sure you are interview‑ready:

  • Have a clear “Tell me about yourself” response prepared
  • Have 6–8 STAR stories ready
  • Complete research on the employer
  • Prepare thoughtful questions for the interview

Use the InStage Mock Interview tool to help you prepare for interviews.
