Thriving In Action

Don't just survive...thrive! Learn thriving skills and holistic learning strategies in Thriving in Action (TiA).

Offered over 9 weeks, learn different wellness and resiliency topics each week. Attend all 9 sessions or choose your own path to improving your academic and personal skills. In this group session, students will meet weekly to learn key skills to increase motivation, optimism, and resilience. You will also be introduced to positive psychology strategies to help improve well-being and academic success. It’s not too late to turn things around, and it’s never too late to learn how to flourish!

 

Week 1: Habit Formation (Do's & Don'ts)

This workshop will discuss themes of intentionality and meaningful actions to help students gain a better understanding of habits and learn strategies to change them. Learn the key steps to creating a new habit and how to avoid the pitfalls of giving up too soon. Ten techniques for bringing more awareness and efficiency to learning and studying are also highlighted.

Week 2: Sleep as a Learning Strategy

Understand how sleep impacts your learning and mental health, explore new hacks to help you unwind before bed, and develop practical strategies to improve your sleep hygiene.

Week 3: Mindful Time Management

Learn to mindfully manage your time. This week discover hacks for setting priorities and techniques to overcome procrastination in order to achieve academic and personal goals while making time for nourishing activities.

Week 4: Getting "In the Zone"

Have you ever felt so engaged and connected to what you were doing that time seemed to stand still or pass so quickly that you lost track of time? Did you feel that you would rather be doing this than anything else? Join us to identify how to shape the critical external factors that contribute to the state of Flow, experiences of optimal performance, and explain what is happening in your brain while in 'the zone.'

Week 5: Signature Strengths

Identify your top character strengths, the characteristics that make you uniquely you, and explore how to lead from them in order to elevate life satisfaction and success. This workshop will also explore how to call upon awe and curiosity in the face of boredom, distraction, and exhaustion.

Week 6: Building A Growth Mindset

Studies have shown that success follows more from perseverance than intelligence, especially during challenging times. Learn the importance of grit, the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset and how to foster a growth mindset.

Week 7: Self-Compassion & Safer Socials

Learn how to be your own best friend in the moments that we need it most. This workshop will also explore how to engage in social media in a healthful, balanced, and intentional way.

Week 8: Optimism

Learn to flip into more positive ways of being and doing to how to widen your view and disrupt unhelpful. 

Date: March 19, 2024

Week 9:  Practicing Gratitude

Learn how to practice and apply gratitude as an academic and well-being strategy.

Date: March 26, 2024

 

Is Thriving in Action Right for Me?

  • Procrastination or perfectionism are getting in your way
  • You study for hours without getting the grades to show for it.
  • You feel burnt out and unsure of how to nourish yourself and rest.
  • It is hard to feel a sense of community, calm, or hope in your academic journey.

     

    What you need to know:

  • This is a holistic 9-week program that runs Tuesdays at 6:00-7:00pm from January 23 - March 26, 2024  in-person. 
  • Personal commitment to the program is the strongest predictor of successful outcomes! We recommend attending all weeks to get the most out of this meaningful initiative but attendance on a week-by-week basis is welcomed.
  • Thriving in Action welcomes all students with a variety of life experiences. This includes (but isn’t limited to):
    • Students accessing Counselling Services
    • Students registered with Accessible Learning Services
    • Students on academic probation
    • Indigenous, 2SLGBTQ+, racialized, and minority students
    • Mature students
    • International students
    • Working students
    • Students raising or caring for families

In other words, if you feel like you’re ready to learn and implement new strategies to thrive personally and academically, we encourage you to sign up by completing the online. Please note, participation in this program will be eligible for the Wellness Advocate CCR.
