Admission
Students are placed into an EAP Semester (level) by language skill level using standard English language test scores.
- To avoid delays or disappointment, we strongly encourage students to obtain their EAP placement level early in the decision-making and application process and before arrival in Canada. This will provide a clear timeline to EAP graduation and your next program. Only EAP Department Faculty or Staff can communicate an accurate placement to you. Contact eap@mohawkcollege.ca to learn about testing, to submit official test results, and to receive a placement in the correct level.
- Students can take a placement test at Mohawk College, or they can provide official test scores.
- Scores must not be more than one year old.
- Students may submit no more than two (2) approved English assessments for placement in EAP. If testing a second time, the second test must be different from the first test. Placement is valid for the current (upcoming) semester and the following semester.
- We accept the following tests:
- IELTS Academic (not a practice test)
- iTEP Snapshot or Academic
- TOEFL iBT
- CLBPT (Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test) or CLB Certificate from a Ministry-approved language school
- We accept Duolingo; however, students must share their full results (not just their certificate) with Mohawk College and must have an interview with EAP faculty to determine placement.
- To support their success, students will usually be placed in an EAP semester according to lowest individual skill score, not overall score, using the chart below.
| Meets Language Requirement for | IELTS ENTRY | iTEP ENTRY | CLB ENTRY | TOEFL iBT ENTRY | DET ENTRY |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate Certificate or Advanced Diploma Entry | IELTS 6.5 no band below 6.0 | 3.9 | CLB 8 no CLB below 8 | 83 or 88 (program dependent) | 115+ no individual score below 105 |

*The Pre-EAP Foundations course is available to students who do not meet language requirements for the GAS-English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program. Please contact Pre-EAP@mohawkcollege.ca or visit Pre-EAP Foundations for more information.
Note: All Mohawk College Diploma or Advanced Diploma programs require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent for entry. We strongly recommend that EAP students have a secondary school diploma or 10 years of formal education to enter EAP. This will allow them to meet (or more easily acquire) academic requirements for their next program.

Financial Assistance
When it comes to paying for your education, investing in your future can be more affordable than you think. A Mohawk education is one of the most cost-effective means of acquiring the skills and knowledge you need to have a prosperous and rewarding career.
As you start on your chosen career path, it's important to have a realistic set of expectations regarding the expenses associated with attending college. In addition to your tuition fees, you will also need to budget for books, supplies, housing, and other related living expenses. You may be able to supplement your income and savings with scholarships, bursaries, or loans. It pays to do some research into what types of financial assistance you may qualify for.

- Explore academic content through field trips and site visits. For example, gather information through interactions at a local historical site, technology museum, factory, or nature conservation area, and reflect on your learning.
- Experience interactive simulations to further develop course concepts. For example, participate in simulated interviews, appointments, debates, and other interactions to apply and develop communication skills for academic and community contexts.

Educational Pathways
Students who successfully complete Semester 3 of the GAS-English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program meet language requirements for admission to most diploma, advanced diploma, and graduate certificate programs in Ontario Colleges.
Please note: Some programs have additional admission requirements, such as secondary school math or science. A few programs with very high-level linguistic demands may require additional language levels or testing, such as IELTS or TOEFL, for admission.
Please check the admission requirements carefully for your future program.
Tech requirements
- Students should have a computer, laptop or tablet for home use. A phone is not adequate for all uses.
- If students choose to use an e-book, they will need to bring a laptop or tablet to class to interact with the material.
- Although language classes are in person, the EAP program makes frequent use of MyCanvas, Mohawk College’s online learning platform. Students are expected to use MyCanvas to check announcements, access learning materials, do online homework or practice, read assignment instructions, and submit assignments.
- Students may need to use lab software or other apps that were designed for PC computers. Students with MAC computers may need to download additional software to access that material.
