Introduction

Quality assurance at Mohawk College is guided by the Minister's Binding Policy Directive, Framework for Programs of Instruction and the Ontario Qualifications Framework through the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) and MCU's agencies including Ontario College Quality Assurance Service (OCQAS), Credential Validation Service (CVS) and the Postsecondary Education Quality Assessment Board (PEQAB).

Topics of Discussion

Ontario College Quality Assurance Service (OCQAS)

The Ontario College Quality Assurance Service was established to provide efficient tools that ensure specific quality and consistency standards are met by the Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology in Ontario (CAAT). OCQAS is responsible for ensuring quality at both the program level through the Credential Validation Service (CVS) as well as at the institutional level through the College Quality Assurance Audit Process (CQAAP). Credential Validation Service (CVS)

The Credential Validation Service undertakes a thorough review of the applications for validation that are submitted by colleges. This review ensures that programs meet or exceed the expectations and requirements set out in the government policy through the Minister's Binding Policy Directive, Framework for Programs of Instruction.

The mandate of the CVS, given by the government includes:

  • Providing reasonable assurance that all programs of instruction, regardless of funding source, conform to the established Credentials Framework and are consistent with accepted college system nomenclature and/or program titling principles.
  • Maintaining the integrity of the credentials and protecting the interests of students and employers who require a reasonable guarantee of consistency and quality in Ontario's programs of instruction.

Postsecondary Education Quality Assessment Board (PEQAB)

The Postsecondary Education Quality Assessment Board was established to ensure that new degree programs offered by Ontario colleges, out-of-province institutions and private institutions provide the high quality of education that is expected from degree-granting institutions in Ontario.

Minister's consent authorizes private institutions, out-of-province institutions and Ontario Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology to offer degree programs. Prior to the Minister granting consent, the Postsecondary Education Quality Assessment Board reviews the program for which the school is seeking consent to offer a degree. After reviewing the quality of the program, PEQAB makes recommendations to the Minister who makes a decision on whether, or not, to grant consent for the program. More information on PEQAB.

Quality assurance at Mohawk is further supported by measures that take into consideration several mandatory and voluntary regulatory bodies as specified on the Mohawk College program webpages.
