Counselling Support

Counselling and Wellness Support Services

The Mohawk College Health and Wellness Centre (HWC) team supports academic success by providing options to explore and understand challenges that impact personal well-being and mental health.

Through our free and confidential service, students gain access to a team of Counsellors with expertise in supporting mental health through short-term goal directed psychotherapy. Counsellors are available who approach their practice from an Indigenous or Intercultural perspective. Our team of registered psychotherapists and social workers empower students to use their strengths and resources to succeed both academically and personally.

Wellness Consultations

Wellness consultations are one-on-one supportive conversations with a Wellness Care Coordinator from the Health & Wellness team. These appointments are available to all students including part-time and continuing education students.

How this service can help:

  • Find and navigate supports on-campus and in the community to meet your mental health, housing, finance, social, or other needs.
  • Create a personal wellness action plan that fits your life, schedule, and goals.
  • Get clear, reliable information about mental health, stress, and other wellness topics.
  • Receive referrals to other services, such as counselling or medical care, when that feels right for you.

Attending an Initial Counselling Session

At the Health and Wellness Centre, we use a "session-at-a-time" approach, designed to help students address their most pressing needs in a focused, supportive environment. Each session is tailored to your goals, and you may return for future sessions if your needs align with continued support. Our counsellors work collaboratively with students to ensure you receive the guidance and resources best suited to your wellness and success.

Short-Term Counselling Support

After your initial counselling session, your counsellor may recommend short-term, goal-directed counselling if it is appropriate for your needs and something you are interested in pursuing. This approach focuses on helping you address specific challenges affecting your academic success and overall well-being across a limited number of sessions with the same counsellor.

Counsellors work collaboratively with community agencies, family physicians, nurses, and Accessible Learning Services to ensure coordinated care. Short-term counselling may also include waitlist support for students accessing outpatient psychiatric or mental health services.

Urgent Support

The Health & Wellness Centre is here to support students in distress by connecting them with appropriate crisis resources. While we do not provide emergency response or rapid assessment, students can come to the Health & Wellness Centre (C109 Fennell Campus) during operating hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30am-4:00pm) and our staff can help activate external crisis services, provide information about options, and offer guidance on next steps.

Options for external crisis support include:

  • COAST Hamilton – Crisis Outreach and Support Team for urgent mental health support
  • Attending your nearest emergency department – For urgent care and assessment
  • Calling 911 – For life-threatening emergencies

Students who have experienced distress may also benefit from support through:

  • Individual counselling sessions
  • Wellness check-ins
  • Referrals to internal or community resources

Students with complex or ongoing needs may work with a Wellness Care Coordinator, who provides follow-up, check-ins, and practical support for students already connected with multiple services.
