Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for both the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant (OLSG) and OSAP?

Yes, you can apply for both OLSG and OSAP for the same study period. As your direct educational costs will be covered through the OLSG, you can apply for OSAP to be considered for living expenses. Students should apply for the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant first, and within the OLSG application, you will be prompted to apply for OSAP if you wish to do so.

Can I apply for the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant before I am accepted into a program?

Yes. If you’ve already applied to an eligible program, you don’t have to wait for your acceptance letter from Mohawk College in order to apply for the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant. You’re encouraged to apply for the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant as early as possible. Enrolment will be confirmed prior to issuing funding.

How long do I need to stay and work in the region where I studied following graduation?

To receive the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant, you need to fulfil a service commitment. This means you’re required to work in the region where you studied for a minimum of six months for every year of study funded by this grant.

For example, if the program of study is two years long, and you received the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant for each year that you studied, you must work in the region for 12 months (1 year) after graduation. If you only received the grant for one out of the two years of study, then you’d only be required to work in the region for 6 months.

If you don’t fulfil the service commitment, your funding will be converted to a repayable loan.

Can I study in one community and work in a different community after I graduate?

You can work in any community within the Southwest region where you studied. However, you are not permitted to work in a different region.

Can I decide not to fulfil my service commitment?

If you fail to fulfil your service commitment, the grant funding you received will be converted into a loan that must be repaid.

How long will I have to find employment after graduation?

OLSG recipients are allowed a six-month window to secure employment in their field of study and in the region where they studied following graduation.

When is the deadline to apply for the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant?

Similar to OSAP, the deadline to apply for the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant is 60 days before the end of your study period, meaning you can still apply for the grant after you’ve started your eligible 2025-2026 program.

How and when will I know about the details of the service agreement and how to fulfill?

You will receive a notice by mail of your service commitment including details on how to verify your employment approximately 30 days before your graduation. An employment verification package will then be made available on your OSAP portal.
